i've learned that the portsmouth rating is 92 for the Hunter 216. do the offer another rating if one doesn't use the Asymetrical? first race yesterday, was fourth boat in elapsed time behind Thistle, MC Scow, and Ensign, but 6th due to rating handicap. my handicap allowed two Cat 22's to move ahead. i was ahead of two other Cat 22's with handicaps applied. i appeared to be loosing time relative to lower rated( higher porstmouth # of about 98) Cat-22 boats on the downwind. they had larger head sails, i didn't try the A-Sail, was single handed. (and the only two times i raised the A-sail were less than great. i need more experience to handle it. another subject later.) our club uses different handicaps on the J-22's determined by whether they use spinakers. new to racing, and sailing, this is a marvelous boat. every "guest" that has sailed my boat remarks on her great character. thanks doug

H-216 Portsmouth Rating

Doug, you're probably not going to agree with me on this but this has been our experience when racing the boat over the last two years. The 92 is too high a handicap for the 216 --- our club will not allow us to race at that number. A Portsmouth of 88 or so without a spinnaker and 86.7 with one is probably about what it ought to be. (Even though our club is saying even that's too high.) Last year the Portsmouth was at 85 but US Sailing got so many complaints that they raised it to the 92. If you go on the U.S. Sailing Portsmouth site, you'll see that that number is based on fewer than 5 actual competitive timings. You will also notice on that site, that there are no additional ratings for the different wind conditions. When they finally get enough data to develop these numbers, I wouldn't be surprised that there will be quite a variation over the various BN ranges for the 216. Current Portsmouth Handicap for the H-216 can be found at: http://www.ussailing.org/portsmouth/tables05/tables05off-2.htm
