Possibly broken ankles & toes! Unfortunately Hunter built some boats with ports that opened out! <?>
You guys need to look at more boats ...
All but one of the 13 (opening) ports and hatches on my boat open out.
Safety is the main issue. Who wants to go running up the sidedecks tripping on portlights? Besides bloody shins you would most likely break them. Then there is the issue of screens. I assume that Bucks boat has screens that slide or open in.

Correct, the screens remove inward.
To the best of my limited knowledge, most Hunters (larger than 34??), built during the past 10 (??) years, have Lewmar outward opening ports and hatches.

Do you know what model ports you have? When I get around to replacing mine I'm going to consider outward opening ports, especially if they can open straight up. I can't tell you how many times the admiral and I have been in the cabin and hit in the forehead due to the ports.

I have Lewmar self supporting ports/hatches (as do most late model Hunters, as far as I know).

My 420 has several different sizes, but most of the ports are "Size 30". You can see specifications by clicking on "Read More".

You may be able to find new Lewmar Ports/Hatches priced lower at Defender, etc,...
I purchased new replacement acrilic w/gaskets & handles from FR&H
two years ago for most of my ports/hatches which were becomming crazed.
Acrilic replacement took me about 45mins per port/hatch (including removing and reinstalling).
It is a tradition brought about by the installation of screens. If you get hit by a big wave they will be torn off.
Whenever I'm around waves big enough to tear my hatches off I generally make it a point to keep them closed...
So far, it's worked for me

Thanks for the info, I'll take a look. When sailing, I will generally leave at least the front four ports closed just in case some water does come over the side, so tripping over them if they opened outward would be unlikely. Also, my decks are so narrow that I generally walk on the cabin top anyway.

Like most of us, I learned MANY years ago that leaving any hatches/ports open fwd of the cockpit (on any but the calmest days), while underway, is just asking to get your bunk, setee, etc wet. And when stuff gets soaked w/ salt water it never really drys out... you've got to take everything home and launder it to rinse the salt out... which can be a hassle w/ slipcovers etc.
So, I'd rather have a hot stuffy DRY fwd cabin, than a hot, less stuffy, WET fwd cabin.
And we haven't even mentioned the wet stuff that falls from the sky in the middle of the night whenever the hatches are left open !!
