In the process of purchasing a 1984 Hunter 31. The Survey sayssssssssss. Getting moisture penatration from the ports. I will need to pull them and rebed. My question is...... since there is moisture in the core, in the sides of the cabin top, around the ports. This is not structual. Can I just rebed with 4200 or should I try to shoot epoxy into the core around the openings. How would I do this being that its on the side of the cabin top and not the deck ? Thanks for any imput.. Did That

... on an O'Day. I just filled the void with marine calk and rebedded the ports. The void was not large: less than a quarter inch. RD

1984 Hunter 31. Is there a core in the sides of the cabin top?

Is there a core between the sides of the cabin top and the hull liner around the Ports? I have been looking into replacing a few ports and the manufactures recommend 100% Silicone. Did you use the marine caulk to just fill the voids or did you also use it to rebed the ports as well? I did not take possession of the boat as yet. That is why I am asking the obvious Thanks for your info Steve

Re Core in Sides

Relevant to a H-31, The sides of the coach roof doesn't have a core, per se, just some material to act as a spacer. A core, in my opinion, is a uniform, solid, material that fills all the voids. I think what you'll find when you tear into it is some wood material, probably some mahogeney or plywood, to fill the void and prevent colapsing of the liner when it has a compression load. Replacing ports: caulk only the outside coachroof layer, not the inside liner. 1: by the time water has reached the inside liner it's too late, and 2: caulking the inside liner only makes it harder to remove the port at a later date. If you ever install new ports you'll be surprised.... they'll look sooooo good.

The Cabin sides an deck have plywood core

When I removed the ports I found plenty of wet, rotten and missing wood. I slipped some new chunks in along with some epoxy and epoxy filler. I swear some of the decks are cored with scrap lumber from construction sites.
