We are purchasing a Hunter 28 and one of the first things I notice is that the ports hold water. When they are opened they are going to dump the water on the interior. I see in the catalogs that there are ports made to drain. Is there a way to modify these ports or any other suggestions? Thanks.

might have drains that only need clean to be cleaned out. Some ports have weep holes that become plugged. Run a wire through the hole.

Fact of life.
I paid a lot of money for new bronze portlights. Same thing, water stands almost one inch up on the glass. Three things one can do(four if you count replacement). One, don't open them. Two, walk the deck and sponge out the ones you plan to open(ten on my boat!). Three, hold a bucket under the port when you open it. The NFM owner suggested that I glue a piece of yarn to the portlight spigot. It will weep the water away. Just what I need, some old rope hanging off my portlights!

The leaking ports have been a pain since buying the Hunter 28 new in 1992. It came from the factory with the "rain drain" ports but some rain still accumulates. They also leak if the gaskets aren't kept very clean. The slightest grit makes them leak. Also because the "plexi-glass" flexes they have to be dogged down with even pressure or they will twist and leak. Too much pressure makes them leak too. They just plain leak and leak and leak... which leaves stains on the cushions below each port. The wick idea seems like a good one. I'll try that this year. Other than this problem I love the boat. Hey, what's a little water. We have learned to live with it and just keep extra towels around and move the cushions when we anticipate rain. Buddy Richardson Cowardly Lion H28

Buddy, I didn't think RainDrains had been out that
long. Are you sure they are RainDrains? You know, a manufacturers pamphlet with the boat when delivered. I installed them during our rebuild. They don't leak. The gaskets are much wider and softer than what Hunter seems to install; Gray ports. Now THOSE act just like what you say,,,,
