We are looking to replace the portlights on our 1987 Legend 35. We are unsure about measuring the original equipment and are wondering if other owners have had good results with installing either Anodized aluminum such as Lewmar or stainless such as Bomar portlights.

Replacing Portlights

Mike, There is a very, very good article in the Photo forum about replacing portlights. The author took pictures of each step & describes the whole process. I printed it out & took it down to the boat so we could follow along. We haven't gotten to the reinstallation of new portlights yet but have found the whole article very usefull. We are going to replace the our portlights with Bomar/Gray plastic portlights because of cost & they will fit the openings as Gray provided the original portlights. The best prices I have seen are on Sailnet. Hopefully they will be having a sale soon & the prices will even better. Good luck.

Portlight links.

There are a couple of Photo Forum articles but Terry's is best(Related Link): http://www.sailboatowners.com/upload/display.tpl?folder=73127723759&fno=17 I also did one a couple of years ago: http://www.sailboatowners.com/upload/display.tpl?folder=Schenck73109831723&fno=17 There is so much information on HOW that it really requires that we all practice the SEARCH techniques. In this example I went to "Photo Forum", keyed in "portlights", and clicked on SEARCH. These two links were second and third in the results.

Ordering Portlights from Sailnet

I think I might have said in previous posts that Sailnet didn't charge for shipping but that was old information as they have started to charge for shipping. I ordered 9 Bomar/Gray portlights yesterday and the cost for shipping was under $10.00. We'll be removing the remaining 7 portlights this weekend. Good luck with your project Joe.

Portlight Windows

I have 2 Starboard and 2 port Bomar Windows that came as Original Equipment. They have leaked for all of the 4 years that I have had the Boat. From Bomar, I ordered the Replacement Window Gaskets and seem to have real good Success with them. They are a lot thicker than the Originals. If you decide to replace your existing windows, remember that they use an almost Permanent Sealer for the Trim, but there is a Liquid Spray Product that helps remove the Bonding Agent. I think its put out by 3M and I believe its name is "Antibond 2015". I comes in a little cannister and is probably only a couple of ounces for about $9.00
