Portlights on 78 H30

I know that this is a tired question, but the new forum archive format has made it difficult for me to find answers. I need to replace the forward ports on my 1978 Hunter 30. West Marine carries Beckson Rain Drain and Beckson Self Drain ports. I also see that Gray is back in business. Basically, I need the proper size from somebody who has completed this project. Will the 7 x 14 from Beckson drop in? If so, should I go with Rain Drain or Self Drain? If someone has ordered the Gray ports, what size (stock number if you have it) did you order. Thank you in advance for your responses.

That's where we differ :)

Took me 30 seconds to find exactly what I wanted in the new format. You search on all words: Hunter 30 Beckson Gray Sort newest first. Here's what I found: Ed Schenck Huron, OH 07/24/05 at 6:13 Hunter 30_74-83 I am not an authority, I installed expensive NFM bronze portlights. What I should have done is what most have, installed the identical Grays. (Editor's note: You can find those here in the chanldery now, cheaper than Pompanette sells them.) As for sizes you should measure. We call the big ones "7x14" and the small ones "5x12". That is close to what is labeled "O.D. Base" in the link. That is the measurement to the outside perimeter of the spigot. The spigot is the frame that sticks out through the cabin trunk. You also have to choose a spigot length and tint. The forward cabin is thinner than the aft trunk for example. My guess for part numbers would be G310 for the 5x12s and G512 for the 7x14s. BTW, we are working on a way you can bookmark pages in the archives. That's serious problem we hope to solve in the next few days.

Forward or aft ports?

The forward ports are the smaller ones, 5x12 in Cherubini lingo. The aft ones are called 7x14. So far as I know only the Grays fit without modifications to the openings. I installed six 7x14 bronze portlights from NFM. Big mistake, took lots of work to make the cutouts SMALLER. The four 5x12s were a better fit in length but still had to be shimmed bottom and top. I like the Beckson idea but think that you will have the same issue. NFM does now make a 7x15 that would have been a much better fit. But everyone seems to favor their newer TriMatrix.

Hey Phil, re. Archive.

I just cut/pasted your query into the Archive search box. I tried both "Find All. ." and "Let Search. . .". In neither case did I find the post that you did. Something is afoot here.

I clicked the second link

'No no Pompanette' and scrolled through the thread -- it didn't actually return your post in the results but it put me on the right path. Your post does not contain all the keywords but some other reply in the thread did. I you use those same settings and search the sizes: 5x12, etc, you're post comes to the top of the results.
