Once again, Mathurin II has an apointment with the boat doctor... This time the rot behind the portholes is being taken care of. Here a few pictures and a little video of the process.

Once again some surprises, a previous owner had used a dish rag as core material

Wow, when you decide to fix something there is no half-way! Ten years ago I installed bronze Newfound Metal portlights. A few of my perimeter frames were wet and a bit rotten. I just dug out the rot and glassed in some perimeter plywood. Actually had to do that with all the big ports because the holes were 7x15 and NFM only had 7x14 at the time. Would give a lot to have the time and facilities to do your kind of work. Looking forward to more pics as you progress.

Phillipe, you do not do things by half measures! When I replaced my Gray ports with Beckson about 8 or 9 years ago, I used a router to cut back the core by about 1/2". Then I filled the gap with epoxy putty before installing the new ones. Someday I hope to put in NFM metal ports like Ed S did (when I win the lottery!). I have been lucky not to have any major soft spots in the plywood core yet. What kind of paint do you use when your deck and cabin repairs are complete? How does the deck paint look a couple of years after your extensive rebuild?
Merci,
Jim

Boy, oh boy. Not for the faint heart. Please show us the closed seems and the final paint job also. I know I also have to do that some day. My side decks are "crunchy" when I walk on them. I am simply delaying the inevitable.

Only my starboard side coachroof was rotted and wet. Port side was fine. I attacked the issue from the inside and all I need to do now is add a bit of trim to the cut lines on the interior liner. The great advantage of excising from the outside is that things like bulkheads don't get in the way.

I can't recall exactly the paint we've applied, I'll look at that next time I'm home. What I can tell you is that we applied an epoxy primer to seal the surface then we applied paint (was it uretane? I can't recall). The paint still look great, I only have 1-2 touch up to do. We've used too much fairing in some areas, resulting in some stress cracks (only in surface, the laminate in intact).

Sandpiper, doing the deck from outside was quite easy (easy is probalby not the best word to describe the job). I can't imagine doing it from the inside, the mess it must create ! You are a courageous man. Furthermore, the deck anti-skid on deck is very easy to replicate with a stucco roller, so it's very easy to hide the job.

For those who aven't seen the deck recore on MATHURIN2 here some pictures of the job: http://mathurin2.blogspot.com/2010/09/les-renos.html

The NFM stainless steel ports that are going to be reinstalled after the job is done:

Coach Roof Rot

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year Phillipe and Robert! Hope all is well .. aside from the rot.

I may have to call you for advice! I've found some soft spots in my coach roof. I hope it isn't as extensive as yours ;-)

Feel free to call or email me/dad is you have questions, the faster you fix it the easier it's gonna be.
