Porthole replacement

Me be needing some how too advice, detailed actully......

replacing a porthole... ive pulled the old one out and now i imagine that i need to clean all the old adheasive and sealant.

after that im at a loss could ya help?

what type of adhesive / sealant do i need? and procedures to get this thing in right ?

What make/brand is the port? What is the port made of? Aluminum, stainless, plastic.??

If they are the originals, they would be plastic Bomar/Gray ports.

A product like DOW 795 would be an excellent choice. The drains have been relocated in the newer units so the old drain cut outs need to be filled with epoxy (or some filler) and the new ones will need to be cut out before the installation can begin.

Generally, when asking a question like this, it is better to give more information, rather than less. The make/model of your boat, or of the ports in question at the very least would be useful, since this may be a common issue.

As for cleaning out all the old sealant—a razor blade scraper is an excellent way to start, and should allow you to get most of it. You do need to clean out all the old sealant, so that the new sealant can bond properly to the hull.

As for what to seal it with, it depends on what the replacement ports are made of.
