I would like to purchase a small portable 120 v electric generator and and have it feed into the shore power connection when I am at sea. This would allow me to run my microwave, etc. Is there any problem with this? Is there any shock potential? Do I need to "ground" the generator (the generator has a floating neutral)?

One that a few of us use is

Works like a charm, quiet...... Never used it under way, but at anchor to top up batteries or any other chore requiring lots of power. Jim S/V Java

I have seen it used many, many times on both sailboats and power boats. They are not as obnoxious (noise-wise) as many other portable generators that are out there. Please be noise-considerate when you purchase one. You won't make as many enemies in the anchorage.

Generator

As with any generator or engine please be aware that CO is produced during operation. Make sure you place in a well vented area.

Honda 2000

We use the 2000 watt portable Honda generator. We use it for our hot water heater, microwave, battery charging, even my wife's hair drier. Works great.

Honda too

I use a Honda EU200 on my Legend 37. It will even run the air conditioner, although nothing else when ac is on. Love it. Quiet, fuel efficient, easy to lug around. Still searching for the perfect place to fasten it down for heavy sea conditions.

Honda EU2000

We have been cruising on our boat Makai, in the caribbean for over 10 months. In that time we have used our Honda eu2000. It has worked like a champ and has withstood the salty enviroment very well. We usally just stash it in a locker underway and bring it out at anchor when the need arises. It is very econoimcal on fuel and is a great supplement. hard to justify spending $6-7K when this works so wellT

Explosive Vapors

You have a second problem other than CO poisoning. The only locker on a new Hunter that is vapor tight is the propane locker. I don't even know if there are any on an older Hunter. The Honda generator is a gasoline powered engine/generator. Where will you store the generator and the extra cans of gasoline? Is your life not worth the cost of a properly installed diesel generator? I sort of place my life and that of my family/friends above 6-7K dollars. One gasoline spill or leak and you are gambling with very high stakes.

A/C with the Honda EU2000 ? ? ? ?

I am purchasing a HUNTER 37.5. Is it really possible to run the 16,000 BTU A/C using the Honda EU2000? One of the responses earlier mentioned it.

OK, but unless you're rowing, what about the fuel for your dinghy's engine?

Del, Where...

...do you put it when you are running it? Where do you currently store it when you are underway?

Gasoline

Gasoline is dangerous below decks no matter what the use. Most of it does come about on today's diesel powered sailboats as a result of outboard units and gas cans for dinghies. Today's new generation of sailors have not had to deal with the hazards of gasoline used for auxiliary means of sailboat propulsion. Most do not realize that all of the lockers on the Hunters are directly open to the bilge area. I see this evident on a daily basis in my line of work. Outboards, gas cans and now gasoline generators stored below decks. Most are obviously uneducated on the unpleasant consequences of such actions and the ease of explosive vapor entry into the bilges of their boats. I entered this thread to hopefully provide beneficial thought. I am certainly not intending to provoke an argument or flame.(-:

I am kinda suprised that no one has converted a honda 2000 to run on propane.
