I have a Hunter 37 and would like to bring onboard a Honda portable gas generator. Can anyone Please give me some feedback on the pros and cons. Also, what size kilowat gen set would I need to power a small 6,000 btu airconditioner. Your response is greately appreciated! Thank you,

careful of exhaust

Be careful of the exhaust does not go inside the boat Buy a Carbon monoxide monitor. Get the most silent generator you can buy.

portable generators

in addition to Willies comments never run in a confined place, never refuel a hot engine, general speaking portable gas generators are not the best option for a boat.

About 2000 watt

A small A/C like that uses ~ 5 amps A/C, triple on startup, 15 amps *110 = 1650 watts. Please don't anchor near my boat if you plan on running that thing on deck all night. Thanks.

gas on board

The difference between diesel and gas is that diesel, when it gets into the bilge, becomes a nasty, stinky cleaning problem, and that gas, when it gets into the bilge, becomes a bomb.

Get Startup amp requirements

Gus, You need to know from the AC manufacturer what the amp draw is at startup. This will tell you how large a generator you need (capacitor start motors draw a LOT more for just an instant when they start). Honda makes a 1000 W that weighs about 28lbs (!) and is as quiet as I have ever heard (or not heard !!) however you may need 2 of these (yes they can be run in tandem) and they are not cheap (about S800 a pop retail). Hope this helps Jerry
