Used the Coleman portable all last summer
Just reinstalled it this year. It does not have a thermostat so we had to put an AC timer on it. Running 6 hours on, 6 hours off seemed to work fine. Would hold cold well for an 8 hour passage. Then we either had to plug in to AC or run the engine while using the DC adapter.

Engel Experiment
We're installing a new Engel 45 refrig/freezer today in the aft berth area before we head out for our month long cruise to Lake Huron's North Channel. I'll report back on how well the unit works. It's remarkably quiet so far and you can dial up cold to frozen. We also bought the Engel cover to help keep it cool and transit lock attachment to keep it from shifting.
