Portable Air Conditioner ?

Do anyone have intall a portable air conditioner on your sailboat?I am thinking of installing one of this unit inside my boat a 9,000 btu unit. Is far less expensive than a marine unit and better that having a wall unit in the cabin entrance.This units will evaporate all the water, the only thing I need to install a exhaut hose that I am thinkin running it to thru the cockpit storage compartment. Will like to hear feedback good or bad on this idea.Thanks;

beware of exhaust hot air

We design traveling exhibits and have used these types in conference rooms for years,,,they work great and cool a space very well...my only word of caution is in the venting of the exhaust Hot air....these units generate alot of Hot discharge air that needs to be vented out of the cooling space,,,so a 4" flex tube will be needed to vent out this air via a hatch or port.....also I would recomend getting the largest condensation pan available..or rig to drain into the bilge....other than that, they can be a good solution for a hot sweaty night at the dock.

I have the same unit!!

I bought the HEIER 9,000 btu unit that stands up, has the exhaust hose and the condensation evaporation feature for my Catalina 30. It was far less expensive then that weak hatch cruise-n-carry unit and seems to be fine. The nice feature about the unit is that it has wheels, a 10-12 foot accordian plastic exhaust hose and can be placed close to where you sleep for better comfort. I am not saying these will cool down your boat during the hottest summer days; no less then a 18K BTU unit would be required, but at night these handy portable AC units do the trick. Seasons over and it goes back into the garage!What I love about them is no condensation dripping on the deck, cockpit or bilge. If I were a liveaboard I would invest in the permanent hometype units with as much BTU as I can install to ensure good cabin cooling; however, for our purposes, these are the best value for our needs. For the exhaust we place it thru an opening port, seal the area with cardboard and simply enjoy.Wise purchase!!Bob30 CatalinaLake Lanier, GA

cheap air conditioning

I bought one of the units you are considering. The vent hose put out as much heat as the air conditioner put out cool. It was a waste of space and didn't work. I returned it and made a lower hatchboard like in jrpla and frmreilly picture pictures below. Got a small used window unit for about $50 and it works great. I can leave it in place when I sail so it is more convenient than those units made to fit over a hatch. The only drawback is that you have to step over it to get in and out of the cabin, not really a big deal.

Don't Leap

I started out with an 8000 btu suitcase that cooled our 272 really well in all but the hottest days...and at night, it would be very cool, i.e. in the 50's.....then each day the boat would heat up until by late afternoon on really hot days, 95-105 it was hot down below....plus it was noisy.....had it two years...it began to leak from the water hose so I sold it......more later... then flying back from Chicago on United I was reading about a Sunpentown 12,000 btu AC just like the one you pictured....measured for it ...yes, it would stand up in the quarterberth....what a pain in the rear end......so much heat exhaust...and so much condensation running to the bilge it was a total pain....it is now standing up right like a little robot in my garage... now I'm just finishing installing a mermaid under the vee berth.....I've tried really hard to do it right..so we'll see.....should be finished on Saturday morning.......I'm ready to set sail.....it's May.
