Porta Pottie users how do you empty your holding tanks? I am just wondering because the marina I am at now has a bathroom and I would just empty in the toilet and flush. I am thinking about moving my boat to a "marina" that is just slips and a parking lot no bathrooms. There is a full service public marina nearby. Do pump out stations have places to dump porti potti's? Thanks, Jeremy

oh boy!

Using a public bathroon is bad enough, if I had to go in after someone dumped their potti potty, well, it would likely "tick me off". I am glad your asking for ideas and I hope someone has some better ideas than using a public restroom. Good luck, Jack

At our marina

The marina's policy is that anyone caught dumping a portipotti in the bathroom will be told to vacate their slip immediately. It is in the lease agreement....

Pumpout

You can set up your port a pot for pump out if you wish. Not sure if "pumping out" will work, if you're not set up for it. Man, this is a totally gross thread, but there's nothing wrong with flushing your stuff in the bathhouse.

Some do, most don't...

Your best option may be to swap out your portable tank for one that can be permanently installed and fitted for pumpout. SeaLand and Thetford have 'em...look an "MSD" designation in the model number.

Take it home?

Its a good question and one I've never given any thought to. I have a Porta-Pottie on my O'Day 23 and it is used primarily by the women guests. When it appears to be full I simply throw the entire thing in the dinghy, take it home and dispose in the normal toilet - then recharge to water holding tank and replace on my next trip. I have heard of some pump out stations pumping the porta-pottie butyou still have to fill the holding tank so .... To me this is no big deal. After reading the other responses I agree about the issues of using a public facility - proably not very neighour friendly. Good luck

Not in our marina you dont....

Not in our marina, you dont flush it down the comode. At least when we had a marina in Slidell, La. Same applied to us as did Tom... you will be told to vacate your slip immediately. People with porta pottys used the pump out station also. As Jack said...if I had to go in after someone dumped their potti potty, well, it would likely "tick me off". Well, I'm off to the next thread, i had enough of this s**t

I hope I'm reading that wrong! You "recharge to water holding tank, and then replace?" Does that mean you use it to refill your water tank when you go back to the boat? Aggghhh. Enough already. Everybody have a great weekend.

Simply ask

Simply call and ask the closest pump out station's dock master if they can pump out your portapotti when needed. Some can and will but havea special nozzle just for that purpose so to keep the regular fittings clean. Best of all, when you can, get a potti that can be pumped out while in the boat, or install a marine head, either one leading to a good sized holding tank. I've done both myself and found it a lot easier and cheaper than taking the potti to the dump station because they charge the same whether pumping 3 or 30 gallons. And if you can do it yourself with no help or special nozzle required, it might be free.

Thanks....

The head is for emergencies only... thats my rule as my wife has said I will be the one emptying it. #1 is fine #2 is emergencies only. (Yeah I know this is already a touchy subject) I have no real issue with just bringing it home. I might have to replace my porta potti because if I remember correctly the one thats in there tends to drip a little when being carried. As for as me dumping in a public restroom all I have to say is: I didn't know it was frowned upon. When my boat is now I would barely call the bathroom a bathroom anyway it's pretty filthy and not very well maintained. I am probably the only boat there that has a porta potti. One last question for the potti's that you plumb for pump out. Do you just install a fitting on the deck and then run a hose or pipe from the pottie to the fitting? Anyway thanks for the help. -- Jeremy

Yes But !!!!

You will probably need a vent line to prevent the portapotti from implodeing. Not sure which is worse, an implosion or an explosion. Oh well, S**t happens.

You Have To Empty Them?

I have a porto potty on my boat. I've owned the boat 3 years now and never emptied it. I thought it just dumped into the East River.

Mort, you sound like

Jeff Foxworthy, "Babies are a lot of work. You know you have to change them every day. When those diapers say 6 to 12 pounds,________ that's all they hold."

Ye gods!

(Fwiw, I'm just starting to get over the worst cold I've had in at least 10 years...it has NOT improved my disposition!) Mort, either your post was meant to be a joke, or you have no business owning a boat...'cuz if you haven't figured out how the toilet works in 3 years, there are too many other things you can't figure out that could you your life. Bob, any tank that's fitted for pumpout must be vented. Drew...if you think this a "gross" topic, it's obvious you haven't been a boat owner very long. And most of the rest of you really DO need to grow up just a little!

I used to bring it home

Hello, When I had a trailerable Catalina 22 with porta potty, I would just bring the porta pot home with me. I emptied it into the toilet, etc., then put it back on the boat. The first year I had the boat I trailered it, so the porta potty was no big deal. The second year I put the boat on a mooring so I had to move the potty into the dink, row it home, etc. That was a bit of a pain, but no big deal. To be honest, I don't see what the big deal is about dumping it in a public rest room. If you do it right, there is no mess at all. If you can go in the toilet, why can't you empty the porta a potty into the toilet? It's the same stuff. I had a Thetford, and it was very simply to empty and refill with clean water. Now I have a boat with a real head, and I need to visit the pump out station. In reality, there are times when I miss the simplicity of the porta potty. No through hulls, complicated pumps, flapper valves, hoses, etc. Barry

Hey Peggie, Have you forgotten

how to laugh? I fully understand the serious nature of marine sanitation and realize that it is not a laughing matter. But half of the time that you post here you seem to me to be scolding.

Peggy, is my wife right?

Fortunately our marina is located in a state park so there's a dump site for RVs. My wife says we can't bring the porta-pot tank home and dump it in the toilet because we have a septic tank. She says the chemicals we put in the porta-pot will kill the working bacteria in the septic tank. Is she right, as usual? Mac

Commercial purpose

Why does this forum allow people to use it for commercial reasons (selling books for instance)? Why not just answer the question and be done with it.

Install a pump out hose?

Could a hose and a deck fitting be installed and the end that goes to the portapotti just drop in when needed? clean off with fresh water and cap the end and mount a hose hanger on the side maybe? cause there's a public pump out at Bay Shore Marina.

Empty less often...

FYI.... Our practice is the first to use it, has to empty it for the season... We usually make it til late June, sometimes July! (No help with your question, but how often do I get a chance to tell about our contest)
