i have a 1981 catalina 30 and have recently noticed a list to the port quarter. the water in the cockpit drains and settles on the port side of the vessel. i have seen other vessels at the marina with a slight list, but my list is drastic. my waterline on the port quarter is down 2 inches and on the starboard quarter up 2 inches. any info would be really helpful. thank you.

Your list seems to be excessive.
Catalina 30s (and most other Catalinas) seem to have a slight port list (due to weight distribution of the interior fittings). However, this list is usually slight (1 - 3 degrees) while yours seems to be much more than that. I would check for heavy stuff that is stored on the port side and shift it too the starboard side (if possible). Over the years, Catalina made minor adjustments to the interior weight distribution to (among other things) get the boat level, but an '81 boat is very early in this evolution. On my '87 C-30, the batteries and the second water tank were under the starboard settee, the water heater and fuel tank were centered under the quarter berth. The black water tnak was the only "relocatable" tank to port, but with the head, dinette, galley and the ice box (as well as the usually overfilled lazarette to port, even these heavy items (the batteries and the water tank) were not enough to totally flaten the boat. remember, everything you move to the other side counts twice. (minus on one side plus on the other). i found two led pigs at a place in houston. they were about 3" x 4" x 14". i put two on the starboard side. i wrapped them in twoels and stored them as far out as possible in the storage behind the starboard settee. it helped a lot.

could it be the keel or rigging
thanx for the replies. im going to move things around and add weight to the starboard side, and hope for a change. my water tank and batteries are also on the starboard side and my fuel tank is centerline under the quarter berth. holding tank is always empty except when cruising. my initial thought was maybe the keel got torqued a few months ago when the boat got hauled for bottom paint, but i cant find any defect when i swim under. another thought is the rigging (if one side is tighter than the other or the back stay to tight) will that have an effect on the stability. the list is not necessarily on the port side but more aft on the port side (port quarter). ill let you know about the weight distribution. thank you.

It's not likely to be the keel causing your list
(unless it is badly and obviously bent) but if the rig is WAY over to port and aft, and you are hanging a barrel of lead from the top of the mast, that might be the cause of your list. ;D If this isn't the case (highly unlikely, and very visible), you have something heavy to port and aft causing your list. My boat has a bad list
more then most boats ive seen .I put all the heavy stuff on the stb side and if there is not much in the refer it sits better.I was thinking of useing led to fix the list but if i sit on the sbd side i sit level .If the boat sits level when your down the dock eyeballing the mast, when you are on board it will sit to one side or the other unless you sit center.or have people move to balance as you sit trying to relax .I am in a lake and had to turn my stb water tank into a gray water tank so i was thinking about useing a a15 gallon flex tank hung on the stb side of the boat under the settee and vent the tanks together. The lake water is very clean and i just pump water in when im out sailing this would fix the list but I just stoped looking. John

Some owners have glassed some lead to starboard
to eliminate the list. Since you don't apparently race your boat, a few hundred pounds (if that much is required) of lead glassed as far out to starboard as practical should cure your problem without too much negative impact. Steve Alchemist
