I always search the forums before posting because there is SO much information here. No luck finding these curtains; I've scanned for drapes, curtains, port lights, shades, windows, etc, and found nothing, so here goes. My Catalina 30 has very worn port hole curtains that are simple, appear to be cotton, and they slide on tracks that are channels with little plastic pins sewn-in to affix them on the tracks. I've seen the new options, and I know I can have them custom made for absurd prices. Does anyone know a source, considering there are SO many Catalina's that must have this style? Thanks for your help! PS! Still trying to identify this steering gear! http://members.cox.net/norfolkragbagger/index.htm

Portlight Curtains

A few years ago,we ordered replacement curtains just like yours from Catalina for our previous boat, a 1981 Cat 30. Catalina asked for some measurements but that process was easy. The new curtains were very nice at a good price.

Steering gear source

I took a really hard look at all your steering gear photos, and then reviewed all the info I've gathered on steering vanes along the way. I'm pretty much convinced that this is the product of a (good) homebuilder's shop. It has some very interesting deviations from the castings and bevel gears used in to many other servo-pendulum units. And it appears to be made virtually entirely of aluminum, which most manufacturers seem to avoid for water contact/linkages. The stainless fittings on the mounting tubing are readily available bimini hardware made of polished cast 316 SS. Nice pictures, and an interesting design. I'd love to hear more about what kind of results it gets.

Thanks for the great info...

... about Catalina as a source, about Odyssey Sail and zarcor.com. Great references! Mr. Shaddock - great input on the steering gear - I understand there are at least 2 of these around - my neighbor is an accomplished sailor and rigging person, but this rig is new to him too. Looks really precision for a DIY. I believe it's all SS; may be some aluminum. My dockmate says it's impressively responsive and accurate - holds very close. I'll update - thanks all!
