Pop Top Hold Up

Stuart Don't be afraid to re-engineer your boat, you may come up with something better. If your boat was set up like mine, a 26D, there will be a sliding bracket at the base of your mast in the bolt rope slot. It has shallow 1/4-20 threads in it. After lifting th pop top, you are suppose to align the threaded hole and bolt on the sliding bracket with a hole on the forward edge of the pop top, and screw in the bolt through the hole in the pop top. Of course, the pop top was never made to sit on and the whole assembly just keeps the pop top from falling down. Do you have the bracket? Do you still want a pic? John S

poptop

thanks john, my boat does not seem to have what you describe, It has a small bracket on the foreward edge of the pop top and another one on the deck just foreward of the hatch. it looks like some sort of metal bar shold be slid into both of them. However you are absolutely right, i was more curious than anything else and it seems these boats (at least the older ones) were not designed by rocket scientists. i will look at a new design. like the piston rod discussed in an older post. thanks again stuart

rocket science?

Nope. Innovative? You bet. Roger MacGregor has caused huge changes in the sailing world. He is the inventor of the swing keel, and was the first to use water balast in a small trailerable boat. The pop top on the 25 uses two struts in the brackets you describe. Just round tubing with the ends flattened and bent to the proper angle.

bar support

i COPIED LARRY'S IDEA... (kiss). but a gas strut is the way to go... ( hello John S, LOL!) (from macgregor-boats.com) http://www.macgregor-boats.com/larry_s/larry_s.html I needed to keep the top up, when working in the cabin, or at the ramp... (one too many times it fell on me and my admrial head!) "A better view of the pop top brace while up, it hinges at the top and is held in place by a wing nut on the bottom of the front brace. " I picked up some 1/4 x 1" solid alumin bar, and drilled and used wing nuts on teh base.

THere is another design with struts

Dave at Highreach has a great idea, in fact, I am going to get him to do mine as soon as I have the dinero$$$ http://highreach.us/hatch_struts.html He has a great idea here, and I think it stays down when needed, I have never seen him hook the underside. Good Luck with that.

Bad day for solo takout

This would not have been a good day to try taking the boat out of the water yourself for the first time. (from Elevenmile res state park, Colorado) http://analogengineering.com/elevenmile/lake_shots/11milestormride.jpg

Cost

I'll have to see how much material is in the project. I figure I'll send along the S/S female snaps and a cheap snap setter so you can place your own snaps because I can't be sure that the snaps are in the same location even among the same models. Windows will be optional and will also increase the material costs and labor. There are at least 6 yards of polyester fabric. ($15/yd). 1 yard of window material about $10. Two zippers at $10/each. OK, I'd think that $225 would buy a Odyssey III Polyester Marine material top with 2 zippers and 2 windows. Still interested?

Mead Madness

I am on vacation starting tomorrow for a week. I will be living at Lake Mead and traveling around the Las Vegas area until the end of the month. Starting in May, I will make a top for D model, even if no one orders one. For me, but money up front will get first in line. My company's name is Inland Sail of Boise, Idaho.

Check out what I have done because of you. We have more to do, but I am working on the headliner issue, and I have some other projects to work on. I will post as I go..... Fuel locker and motor mount, and a double light cabin light. Gregg
