Popcorn pops at almost exactly 350 degrees (makes a great temp indicator for oil, in fact). 350 is well below the smoke point for olive oil. I never use extra virgin olive oil for frying because it can get a funky flavor with higher heats. I go for the plain ol' olive oil that comes in the gallon tin jug. As for popcorn, I use the butter flavored stuff that's sold next to the popcorn. Hopefully I won't get popcorn lung...

Peggy, Keeping your total fat intake to less than 30 percent of your total calories and don't over eat and you can eat as you please. Usually a high fat diet is also a high calorie diet. We both know that calories count no matter what flavor they come in.

Jiffy Pop and the Magma

If your Magma is a charcoal one it will not work. Jiffy Pop works just OK on a camp stove because the burners are such a small diameter. A cast iron griddle and using both burners on your Coleman stove works well for Jiffy Pop. Seems like on the Magma the heat is spread pretty far out so it would work well.

I had never heard of olive oil being unhealthy at high temps, but I guess you can hydrolize any oil. I don't eat ANYTHING with hydrolized oils.
A lot of the store bought popcorn has fake butter which is hydrolized oil. All we have in our kitchen is olive oil. We don't use alot though, just a splash to keep the chicken from stickin'.
I always thought movie theatre popcorn smelled like urine. For some reason I haven't been a big fan. And when ever I stand infront of a urinal that hasn't been flushed I think "ahhhh, fresh popped popcorn.

Shell, you should consider changing theaters. Out here in California the good theater chains serve fresh popcorn. They have to because the competition is fierce. I NEVER patronize theaters that don't cook their popcorn fresh, in plain view of the customers.

I'm never going to the movies in NY!

Shoot, I work in a CAR DEALERSHIP, and we make fresh popcorn 5 or 10 times every day! The aroma is a psychological thing- people tend to feel more welcome, and more relaxed. Hermit, I don't even know HOW to respond to your post, other than to say I think you have issues;);)!

Most people (not Hermit) enjoy the smell (not Hermit) and the taste of fresh popcorn(not Hermit). I've never made it on the boat (like Hermit, I don't really enjoy it!), but I also worked in restaurants for over a decade, and I would never fry with olive oil, virgin or other wise ( the only difference between them is 1st press-virgin- or not first pressing). That's not to say you can't... it gets a rancid taste when it breaks down, and I have a sensitive pallet. It will break down at lower temps too, but it takes a little while. Your popcorn will be done long before.

Other than that I agree with Peggy's choices.... by the way Ross, I didn't know I had a choice of genes- is it too late for me to change em?:)

I don't think Hermit said he didn't like the taste, just that it reminded him of other smells. ;)

Cup, No way to retroactively change your gene pool. just swim where you fell in and enjoy the water.

Jiffy Pop is an all time favorite on board with us and we buy a bunch and stash them till that night when we'll want to do something different without a fuss or a mess to clean up, but Ilike all the other ideas even though we have a microwave on board we try not to use it while away from the dock

My wife and I have made JiffyPop on the alcohol stove on our boat. It requires a bit a patience, but it works. I therefore assume that it would also work fine over propane since everyone insists that propane is so much hotter and superior. But I have been making popcorn at home using a covered stew pot, vegtable or canola oil and popcorn for years. Pour the popcorn out and melt butter in the still hot pot, then pour it over the popcorn and enjoy. My wife likes to a garlic powder to the melted butter. I'm more of a purist - just a tiny bit of salt is good. As noted above, and on JiffyPop's instructions, shake the pan at least occassionally as you cook.

You can power a small 700W microwave oven with an inverter for a couple of minutes at a time. You may use around 10 amps of battery capacity for a 5 minute use. To me not having to clean the stove and a pan is a no brainer.

Nancy and I had some popcorn tonight and I just cleaned the popper with a paper towel. It must have taken all of about 30 seconds.

Re: Olive oil and popcorn

The Magma grill works fine for Jiffy-pop so it would work well with other "pop-your-own" arrangements. And if your genes favor a bit higher cholesterol level, just pop an extra Lipator and enjoy. We like powdered parmesian cheese on ours (in Wisconsin, we put cheese on everything).

Re: Olive oil and popcorn

They used to make a long handled wire mesh basket type popper for use over an open fire. Obviously this resulted in a dry popped corn and you had to season it in the bowl. Popped corn is a low fat food and like bread we can eat it with out fear, it is the things that we eat with the pop corn or bread that get us into trouble.
