I just bought a 1995 Hunter 23.5 and launched it last week at Bay Hill Marina on the TN River. Recently received a quote from Ameriseam for a Pop-up camper cover for $375. Any thoughts out there on this accessory? What alternatives for a cover are available other than this Ameriseam model?

Pop top.

Mike, Congrats on the "new" boat. I have a 240 that is essentially the same as your 23.5. I opted for the Ameriseam companionway cover (camper top) when I purchased the boat. If you plan to do any overnighting, the cover is well worth the money IMHO. It gives you standing headroom, provides plenty of ventilation, keeps the interior bug-free, and is easy to put on and take off. Go for it! You'll love it. Mark Kissel Kittiwake/98H240

Pop up

It's a MUST HAVE. I love mine- on my 240. Like Mark Kissel said, you get standing headroom, an airy cabin and it keeps the bugs away. The canvas part stows in a small sports bag and the frame tucks neatly way. You can have it up or down in just about 3 minutes. As for where you can see pix of it, Ameriseam doesn't have a website; but it can be seen in the Hunter Owner's store here on this site.

Must Have

Unless you're extremely short and don't want to use the galley on your knees, the "pop top" is a must. We have a screen for the campanionway with velcro to seal to the pop-top and it keeps most of the bugs outside. It sure helps the claustrophbic atmostphere in the cabin and on those rainy days it's even more help. Ours came with the boat and is packed away in a cheap 'suiter' bag, frame and all. It works well. It's possible to sail with the top up on a rainy day too. Ken S/V Wouff Hong

Spent a lot time on my 240 with the top up this summer, a very wet summer where I am. The top provided dry conditions for a couple of wet weekends. There were no leaks, however treat the top the same way you would a tent. Try not to touch the canvas when wet or you might get a leak where you touched the canvas similar to being in a tent.

Get the deluxe model

There are 2 camper covers, the standard model, which has non opening plastic windows, and the deluxe model, which has screens and lets the windows unzip and roll up from the inside. I bought the deluxe model for my 23.5, in the same color (Persian Green or Aqua, I can't remember) as my sail cover. It mached the stripe color nicely. The cover provided lots of ventilation and with the screens, was very effective at keeping the bugs out, too. Mike Pajewski H23.5 "Summer Rental" & H26 "Loon"
