Have been sailing a '23 for 23 years and always wished for more headroom. Does the pop-top model work well? Does the top leak? Can you sail the boat with the top up? Are the side curtains / screens more of a nuisance than a help?

pop-top 23' reply

I have a 1972 oday 23'. Yes the headroom is kinda cramped when the top is down. The model of my boat is the kind where the entire cabin lifts up on four posts, when fully lifted, it gives 6' headroom. The canvas I have for the entire pop-top is fine. cranking it up can be a slight workout, but nothing that can't be sorted out. No,it hasn't leaked for me at all and NO..definitely it's not recommended to sail with the pop-top up. canvas won't keep a stray wave from getting into your cabin! I'd only raise it when at anchor. Side curtains work fine, although I admittedly don't use the curtains that much. I actually took them off, so I can install new cabin lights etc.

Keep in mind.....

...That there are 2 "pop-up" models. The first is the true "pop-up" version where the whole room pops up (slides up the mast..this is for through hull mast). The 2nd is the "convertible" pop-up. These are on the deck mounted mast and only a small portion of the roof is raised, basiclly only over the table area. I have the later one and love it. All my screens and curtins are in great shape, and even though I have sailed with the top up, I normally don't.
