poor performance on a port tack

Mike

Hello all. I seem to lose 1 to 1.5 knots boat speed on a port tack compared to starboard tack. Mainsail and jib cars are positioned the same on both tacks. Leeward and windward shrouds are tight on this tack. Any ideas? Thanks, Mike

Roller Furling?

Mike, I had a similar problem with my Precision 23. It turned out to be a problem with my roller furler. Well kind of, it was more like how I was using it. I would typically unfurl the jib on a starboard tack and cleat the furling line. Then when switching to a port tack, the jib was not unfurled far enough because of the direction the line is wound on the furling spool becoming tighter (because I cleated it tight). It took a few times out before I realized I was doing this. It only seemed to effect about the bottom quarter of the jib, making the leading edge funky. Yours probably isn't that simple, but maybe this will help someone else reading this thread. JerryA

How are you measuring speed?

Mike, If you're measuring with a knotmeter, its placement might be the difference. I sail "faster" on starboard tack, too. Reason is knotmeter transducer is located right of the keel, and when heeled to port the water is more turbulent and faster on the starboard side of the keel (Bernoulli's Law). Try measuring speed on both tacks with a GPS. Might come out the same. /Eric

Not Unsual

Its not unusual for boats to show a port/starboard bias. There are asymmetries in the shape of the hull, fairing, keel and rudder placement etc. and that's not to mention the rig. Do you know for sure that your mast is centered on the deck. Where are your fuel/water/waste tanks? 1.0 to 1.5 knots is a lot however. Here's another idea: Are you sure your windex is centered? An asymmetry there could have you pinching on one tack and footing on the other. And there's tuning. If you're looking at only if there's slack or tension on the shrouds for assessing rig tension maybe you should get a tape measure and a loos gauge. Its a B & R rig - right? I find mine hard to tune and since I only go off the deck occasionally I assume there is some asymmetry in the rig. That's just the way its going to be.

Funny Thing

My 376 is MUCH faster on Port than starboard - according to the Raymarine log - but not according to the GPS. Its in the ofset mounting of the log transducer and even rotating this to align with the water flow makes no difference. My transducer is about 6" on the stbd side and 12" ahead of the keel.

I changed mine

Had the same problem when I bought the boat. I relocated the knot log to centerline 18" in front of the keel. Both tacks now identical. Just another reason to wonder why the manufacturer(who should know better) continues year after year to install this sensor the same stupid way.
