I have Evercoat finishing resin 100518, I am applying on the outside, bottom of hull. The instructions talk about wax rising to the top to cure. In this case the top will not be the exposed surface? Will it cure?

It is called Amine Blush. Wipe it off with some white vinegar on some old cult up T-shirts or buy some rags.

Nope- Amine blush happens on epoxies, not polyesters.

The wax in polyester resins is to impede the air from the surface so it will cure. That's what the ."finishing" part means. Resins with no wax are used as the layup is being done, have no wax, and are called "layup" resins, since they DON'T cure totally, so the next layer can get a chemical bond.

And yes, the wax will come to the surface and do it's job, even upside down. But rgranger is correct on the wash down. White vinegar will work fine. So will windex:)

And for amine blush, all you need is just plain water. That is due to unreacted amine's in the epoxy/hardener mix. The Gougeons used to recommend ammonia water, but don't any more- just a water wash down.

Worked with this stuff building and repairing boats since 1976.

Greatly appreciate the responses,

Follow up question, will it bond to the layer underneath? I am repairing some 1/4" nicks/gouges.

Depends on how old that layer is. If it's the bottom of and old boat, not well. You MUST sand an older fiberglass to provide "Tooth" This wiil give you a mechanial bond, where resin to fresh (green) resin will give a chemical bond.

I'd sand WELL with 100 grit, wipe down or vacuum and then use the new resin.

For just the nicks and gouges, use a sand paper, sand inside the nick or gouge to get any crap out, feather the edges a bit, THEN put the new resin in.

1/4" deep? Or quarter wide? If it's deep, yes resin/epoxy. Wide sounds like a gelcoat repair, which is also poly.

And no, like said, epoxy or resin either one doesn't know if it's upside down. It just means that it comes to the surface..

1/4" wide and does not look like it penetrates past the fiberglass.

Man, if it is not that deep, I would consider a gelcoat fix. It is little more than polyester resin tinted white. Smear a big glob on the repair, tape saran wrap over it till it cures and go from there. If the 'gouge' is only skin deep, there's no reason to complicate the situation.
