You have to be kidding!

Awhile ago I responded to a "what's the best?" question with something along the lines of: the guy who asked his mom what the BEST wife for him would be a real piece of work. Especially in sailing, which in and of itself is a compromise, there just isn't any "best." In my case, the BEST is the boat I currently HAVE. Catalina 34, hands down.

Ask cruising world magazine....

They run that poll every year.... for new boats and used ones. Best between 25 and 60 ft??? dude you've got to be kidding! Even the experts who've tested hundreds of boats would have a hard time picking one in such a wide size range. GET REAL.

Bought and Paid For

I agree with Stu that the best is what you have bought and paid for. A boat just sails better when it's 100% yours. The Catalina 34 is a nice boat as is my Pearson 323. My brother and I had this discussion. His position was that he wanted a great boat in the $200,000+ range. But since he didn't want to spend that kind of money ..he has no boat. My position was that I'd rather be sailing whatever I could afford. I'd rather be taking a 37' Pacific Seacraft around the world but sailing a Pearson 323 around the lake is better than not sailing. Heck I used to take the kids windsurfing on a 20 acre pond and we had a great time at that too!!!! In the big pond I didn't have to worry about them being ran over by stinkpots.

My Choice

Best production coastal cruiser is (25'-60'). Catalina 30 Best production "Blue Water" cruiser is, (25'-60') Modified Catalina 30 Best custom sailboat (in general is). My Catalina 30 See a pattern? :D Sailing is a passionate activity, we are all passionate about our boats. Without passion, there is no logic to explain the relationship we have with our boats (or pets or partners).

What you have

Again, hopefully what you have. My '85 Pearson 34 suits me. Minimal electrical stuff to maintain. Basic boat, well built. Built for sailing, not sitting in a Marina. But that's my cup of tea.

Columbia and the Original

I like the Columbia 10.7. And my hope is to one day use the specimen I'm thinking of on a blue water cruise. As for the best custom boat, if "Spray" was all Capt. Slocum said she was, she's my pick hands down (too bad she's no longer around).
