Hi All,

Following the recommendations of many here I am the new owner of a Makita polishing machine and the Presta finer polishing compound. A few questions - can I polish out the black streaks I have from water run off points or do I have to remove those before I get started? Any advice on how to get a new wool pad wet enough with compound to get started? (I can imagine flinging compound all over as I get started)
Any recomendations for polishing around stainless ports, teak toerails, etc on the smooth parts of the deck?

My practice is to apply compounds and polishes by hand and use the machine only to buff off.

The buffing pad will become laden with the residue but most can be removed from the pad by "spiking". That is to run the pad and hold the blunt end of a paint stirring stick against the pad to loosen and expel the dried residue.

For wax, I apply and remove entirely by had because a wool bonnet on a machine will "fill-up" so quickly and become useless with wax. Spiking a wax-laden bonnet does not remove the wax in my experience.

Regarding the other areas you mention, I would do those areas by hand and keep a machine bonnet away from any teak. The smooth areas of the deck should NOT be waxed, but you can compound and polish them. I can't recommend anything to apply over the cleaned deck because I have not used anything myself.

Hopefully others will have more info for you.

Get rid of the black streaks first. Otherwise, you'll probably just spread them around.

has any one used the blue compound that comes in stick form and applyed the the buffing pad and then buff the fiberglass surface....this stuff comes in a stick just like white polishing compound for ss
