Polish the mast and boom?

We stepped the mast of our '76 Oday 25 to move it out of harms way during the recent Hurricane Charley event. Now that the mast and boom are down I'd like to clean and polish them if possible. Have any of you done that and if so, got a few hints and suggestions on how to do it? Both the mast and boom have some degree of light pitting and what appear to be rust stains.

Wash it down and flush it real good (car wash seems to work). You want to get any "encrusted" salt out of the pits. Follow-up with two coats of Starbrite boat polish "with teflon". I've done this basic type of thing on my O'Day 22 for 32 years.....The mast & boom are still in excellent shape. Another good thing to do, using a can of good spray lube (not WD-40), is to soak all the standing rigging and wire haryards with the lube. Good Luck!
