Poli-Glow v Island Girl

I asked all saiulors which they preferred about a month ago -- based on the responses, I switched to Poli-Glow & I spent the day today removing it before it did any more damage to my hull. THe poly prep cleaner did little to remove oxidation -- when I got it to a tolerable level, I found that the varnish was drying as I was applying it, creating a sticky mess. I should have just stopped there, but I continued. Thank God, I think I got it all off today & re-ordered Island Girl -- which was always good, but I thought Poly-Glow might be better & last a little longer --it didn't last 24 hours on my boat. Unfortunately, I'm out $50 and I'm a week behind schedule -- just wanted to warn other sailors --Mike

either/neither

I think both of these are liquid acrylic with different names. Regardless, it sounds like you didn't apply it as directed. The one time I used Poliglo on my son's boat, it was badly oxidized. Cleaned up well and the acrylic went on like water and dried almost instantly. If I'm any indication, the stuff is idiot-proof. From your location, it might just be the temp at which you applied it??? Don

Congratulations

You are the first person in the world to have trouble applying Poliglow. There is no prize for this. Good luck with Island girl.

What's wrong with this picture?

Prep did little? I just did mine and all the old wax and oxidation came off as expected. Varnish drying? Maybe you just mis-spoke. That is not varnish. The only time I have seen the Poly Glow dry that quickly was when the ambient temperature and the temperature of the hull was very high. I doubt if it was much over 50 degrees in New York this time of year. Whenever you are unhappy with any product and it doesn't perform as advertised..ANY PRODUCT... call the vendor or manufacturer and plead your case. You will get satisfaction 90% of the time.

Not a temperature problem

I applied PolyGlow in the heat of Florida on my 25 year old boat and it looks great. I think the problem Mike had was removing the previous product. He should have used the other products remover before using PolyGlow hull cleaner. PolyGlow hull cleaner is not to clean a different hull restorer product. Since Mike is the only one with a problem there is no need for any warning.

I would suspect that . . .

there is an underlying problem that would effect any product, as the other posts have suggested. In general terms, Poli-Glow is a lot easier to use than Island Girl. So, IG may likely lead to similar problems. I would try to figure out what is going wrong first. It could be a prep issue or an application method issue. I would also talk to the folks at Poli-Glow and see if they can help. BTW - the Poli-glow prep liquid should remove the Poli-glow itself, so you can get back to a starting point. Have fun, Ted
