Hi All,

Anyone knows where I can find polar for the 40.5? Prepping for the swiftsure and curious to see them. I couldn't find them with a quick search either on this site, or on the web in general.

On a somewhat related topic, just completed the US sailing offshore safety at sea 2 day hands on seminar including getting into a life raft in the water... I found it very valuable, it's a very good use of a weekend and $350 if you're going to head out for an extended stretch or going to to do overnight racing. You can find out more here .

Looked the world over and thought I'd found true love but did not ever find polars for a 40.5 or any other size hunter for that matter. I think it is because there are lots of sail combinations that would have to be covered. There are programs that can take seatalk data and produce polars for you boat. This takes quite a while as you have to sail on every point of sail in all the wind conditions....... lots of data to gather.

Some thoughts:

1) I've never heard of or seen polars for ANY Hunter boat. Normally they are generated by the designer at design time. If this was done, and I doubt it was, they could have been released. But Hunter and Catalina dont do this as a rule.

2) Polars assume the optimal sail configuration for the wind speed. This is based on the boats rig and possible sail plans. It includes things like headsail reduction and reefing.

3) It also assumes a folding prop. If you don't have one throw them out.

4) Polars are really interesting for upwind and downwind sailing angles and speeds. For a distance race with lots of fetching, they offer little.
