Does anyone know where polar diagrams come from? Is this something you make yourself like swinging a compass, or are they obtainable somewhere for a given boat? Thanks.
Polars are plots that show the potential performance of a boat at different wind angles and speeds. they have to be created for each boat-some mfrs generate them as part of their hull development, but usually an owner has to do it. you can use a polar for your boat to tune, trim sails, etc.
...your boat if a stock production model, chances are that USsailing has polars for you. If not you can make your own, it takes a little time to gather and chart the info but it's well worth it. Polars show you how to choose any sail combination for any given point of sail.
