Pointing to the Wind

I have a Hunter 170 and my only complaint is the boat does not seem to be able to point to the wind very well. It seems like I have to almost fall off sixty degrees instead on the normal 45. I have tried many adjustments but none seem to work well. I was hoping that someone here might have a little insight or some ideas I have missed. Collin

It's a question of balance

What are the characteristics that give you concern when your beating? Are you beating into choppy seas? Are you sailing in gusty conditions or is the wind pretty constant? Does your boat knock down and round up in a gust? Do You move your ballast forward when you're close hauled? Does your boat have a swing keel or is it a dagger board that come straight up? Do you shape your sails to the wind speed? Those are a bunch of questions that can give us a good place to start. I've done a lot of dingy sailing and sometimes it's not a question of tuning the boat. Control inputs are crucial and tactics have to be employeed instantly. A dingy is very challangeing to sail but once you've got it, you can sail anything! Larry Barnes

Little Headway

I get pretty happy with things in light winds but at winds above 10kts and in gusty winds that old problem comes up. It's frustrating to not be able to make better progress while tacking. I'm going to have to work with the sail shape more. I always can point higher on a port tack than on a starboard. It never fails and it doesn't make any sense either. A dingy or a sunfish might help me understand this problem better. Chances are you're doing better than 60 degrees but it's still frustrating. Ken S/V Wouff Hong

Conditins

Generally speaking, the 170 does point high and sails fast too. I raced one in a motel pool ovver a year ago at a dealer meeting which makes me wonderr the conditons you are sailing in. Larry pointed out this very well. Let us know about the conditions you are asailing in and we can go from there

Misrigged Mast

I wonder if the mast is mis-rigged? If it is bent to one side, might it not change the draft of the sail enough to affect performance on certain points of sail? My 170 points closer on a port tack than on a starboard, but not enough that it becomes merely curious.
