Pointing Close

I have a '88 MacGREGOR 26D with daggerboard. I have recently modified the rudder adding 2 inches to the leading edge and shaping a NACA 0014 foil. I have experienced a vast improvement in handing. A different situation; I have a problem with pointing close. Yesterday I was in a race and experienced great difficulty pointing close, when on a tack around 20 degrees from the wind, my Genoa luffed while other craft with larger Genoas were able to point closer and I noticed that their headsails were filled throughout the leg. I would like to find out how to adjust my craft so that I am optimally tuned. Currently the craft is mainly stock so a backstay tensioner does not exist.
