I'm replacing bulkheads on '77 ODay 25....I've read that Meranti Hydrotek marine plywood is a good product for this but I am having trouble finding this around Philadelphia or Baltimore. I can get Okoume marine plywood . Has anybody used either product and have an opinion about the use of Okoume for bulkheads? Thanks

Go to a builder lumber supply yard not the box stores and ask the counter man if they can order it for you. Almost no one will stock material that doesn't sell regularly but most yards can order almost anything you need.

Lumber supply houses near me can all get douglas fir marine grade plywood which has a fir exterior ply, but they say they can't get Meranti or Okoume....most of what I've read says Meranti Hydrotek is better, more dense and has a better finish ply.

What is wrong with getting some A-A grade exterior plywood and putting formica over it?

Wilsonart Laminate has some Nepal Teak that looks like teak which would be great for the saloon side and you can use something else on the other side if you choose.

stx203 Pennsylvania is a really big place. Can you narrow down your shopping area just a little. There is a good supplier in York and in Baltimore the is Harbor Supply They will scarf panels to practically any length.

Interesting idea however that appears to have been what was used before and the covering on the plywood masked the wood rot that was going on behind. Caused the bulkhead to fail while I was under sail which toppled the mast....looking to reconstruct with stronger materials and do a better job than previous owner at keeping up with chainplate leaks..

Here is what I'm doing

I have one bulkhead that is kind of iffy, due to a leaky chainplate, that is pretty welll hidden from view. The bulkhead is 3/4" thick. I'm going to use 1/8"luan plywood from HD, and glass five pieces together, and then make up the rest of the thickness with woven roving on the inside where the chainplate attaches. I have never used this method before, but used to communicate with a guy up in the NE who built transoms like this. Is super strong, and the resin will almost completely soak through the 1/8 material. Making it virtually impervious to rot.

How do you plan the clamp the stack? A vacuum bag would work but might be more hassle than help.

Clamp the stack

Ross,
This bulkhead is small, only 2' x 4'. Gonna put it on some saw horses, with a piece of 3/4 ply wood on the bottom, and stack some weight on top of it. Problem now is getting the old one out without destroying it, to use for a pattern. But cardboard will work for a pattern if necessary.

Keep checking and asking around. I gotta think that there is a lumber supply in that area that handles teak ply.
I got some here in Detroit early last year for $160 a sheet for 12mm ply. Though it might have gone up since then. Also ask what is used for the core material.

Teak is very fine wood and I will never disparage it but teak plywood only looks like teak. The teak is never more than 1/28 inches thick on each side hence the need to be concerned about the core. If you need the look of teak that is fine but otherwise you are just getting plywood.

This worked great for me....and cheap....(pic)

Here is a pic of a C30 I restored couple years ago. All new bulkheads and bought the plywood from a local woodworking shop. I think it was Brazilian Mahogany for ~$60 per sheet. Using Minwax "English Chestnut" stain, I was very satisfied. Good luck

Very good odds that it is NOT water proof glue. Did you boil a piece before you used it?
