i've built about 5 boats from scratch. glen-l squirt in mahoghany, stevensons project vacationer (still sitting in the woods unglassed after 10 years, still solid under tarp), turtle, and Junebug CC. I even built something at the woodenboat school in maine--disappearead on family vacation when i was 18 and signed up for the weekend class. so much fun.

I think i could probably build something w/o a plan. just by eyeball. I would use 1/4 luan...most of the above models used 1/4". and glass over--maybe. i might just paint it instead of glassing. a good heavy coat of the right thick watertight paint?

anyway, what have you built lately? no $$ plans. im looking for slap-it-togehter models. a few sheets, some paint, a used 5hp.

any ideas?

anyway,

Eh.. my son and I built 5 strip canoes.. got tired of epoxy and glass .. then went to restoring wood canvas canoes, designed and built a one off 15ft solo W/C. Now planning of building a 9 or 12 ft dinghy either strip or glued lapstrake. In my heart of hearts I'd have 40+ft wooden sailboat but know I could never really afford the restoration and upkeep.

Built an 8' pram while at a campground in Alaska, using a handsaw, handcrank drill, and a plane. Used 2 sheets of 1/4" plywood, and a half sheet of 3/4" for the ends. Some 1 x 2's for edges, and 1 x 8's for seats. Srcewed, and glued with Gorilla glue. Made the oars from 2 x 2's and left over plywood. Painted it green with rustoleum paint. Took 2 days. No plans.

I used the heck out of that boat the rest of the summer. Even crossed some pretty fast rivers with it. It is still in good shape 7 years later in my back yard.
