Plugging Exhaust

During storm prep a question arose and we couldn't come up with a definite answer so I put it to my esteemed colleagues...

Should we plug the exhaust outlet on the sterns of our boats? General consensus was that it wouldn't hurt. What's everyone think? Final preps tomorrow.

If you leave the boat in the water, it can't hurt, but more than likely won't help either. If your talking about a boat on the hard, it the water gets to the exhaust port, the boat is floating away, so nothing gained.

Not necessary! Remember, the exhaust hose is confiqured with an internal loop inside the boat. Like a toilet, the water can only rise to the air lock level. As long as the hose clamps on the exhaust hose are good, no need to worry about the exhaust taking in water. Spend your time on securing other areas of the boat - companionway hatch (tape shut), close seacocks, turn off unnecessary/unneeded appliances (this is all of them), disconnect shorepower cords (many marinas cut electric power anyway in severe storms) and remove them and double up on docklines, etc.
