I'm having a problem with a slight leak in my fuel tank (20-yr old plastic). I have someone fixing it, but the other thing I think happened is that the vent line is plugged or clogged (probably bugs or something).

Any suggestions on how to clear clogged ventline?

Since the vent is plugged, any ideas on how to keep the tank vented? I think this is beginning to sound like an off-season job.

Piece of wire

A piece of wire should be able to clean out your vent. I have noticed that spiders like to make nests in my vent hole!!!! But I doubt that it is air tight. Mud wasps might be able to plug up a vent. With the fumes I doubt that the insects would go very deep into the vent. I would not be too aggressive as you might punch a hole in the plastic tubeing. If all else fails remove the tubing on the inside and puch out with the wire.

Remove the hose.

John:

Just remove the hose. It is probably a good time to replace it too.

Once the hose is remove you can clean out the vent fitting. Usually some critters have decided that diesel fumes are not all that bad. Once they plug it up there are no more fumes either.

Remove the vent line right at the tank fitting and give it a shot of compressed air from a shop compressor or a shop vac in reverse. This will immediately let you know if there is any blockage and will probably clear it instantly.
I agree it would be a good time to inspect the hose to see if it needs replacement. I would also consider a Fuel Whistle spill preventer.
