Anyone have any suggestions on how to moor a Hunter 23 to plug? There is no cleat on the bow of mine. Is it safe to moor it from the eye on the bow (that the trailer winch connects to)? What type of mooring line rigging is best? I don't want to be pulling this thing off the up river dam in the middle of the night.

but what does, "to moor a Hunter 23 to plug" mean? The eye bolt on the bow is certainly strong enough to moor to if it was installed by the manufacturer. Make sure it is thru-bolted and has a backing plate. You need a cleat on the bow. Why not intall one? Happy Sailing Jim Schaff s/v Savannah

No bow cleats?????
If you don't have a bow cleat, what have you been doing when you dock the boat? My 23 is an older model (1986) it has a single cleat in the middle of the deck with chocks on each side. I'm not crazy about this arraignment but it works for now. I plan to remove it and install a cleat on each side. If your boat has no bow cleats you need to install some with a proper backing plate. The bow eye will work for now to tie up your boat to a mooring ball.

Another term for 'plug' would be a mooring buoy. Calling it a plug must be a Wisconsin thing. I guess I'll have to install a cleat somewhere on the bow.

My 23 is a '86 as well. The only cleat on the bow is on the port wall inside the anchor locker. I just got the boat, but the previous owner seemed to use a line attached to the bow eye for tying up to the dock. Where is your cleat located in relation to the anchor locker? I can't see a way to put anything but the smallest cleat in front (toward the edge of the bow) of the anchor locker. I have the original Hunter instructions for stepping the mast for this boat. It refers to the horizontal pin in the bow as the "mooring pin." Can anything be done with this?

Of course the factory bow eye is sufficient to tie up to anything but inconvenient to reach from topsides. I think Hunter used the pins fore and aft for a streamlined look but not very convenient for tieing off. I'd definitely install horn cleats fore and aft along the gunnels. Mine are just behind the pulpit up front and on the aft quarters. I'll attach a pic. By the way. I'd also install cam cleats for the jib sheets instead of those chinsy factory horn cleats.

Thanks for the advise and picture. I thought the same thing about the horn cleats for the jib sheet. Seems like they would really be a pain!
