pls explain why vertical vents are bad New to this also but I understand physics a bit. So I'm curious...Why is a vertical vent line not as good as a horizontal one? Thanks, Steph

Because...

Gasses produced by waste are heavier than air...they don't rise, ambient air--especially warm ambient air--doesn't fall...so there can be no exchange of air via a vertical vent line. No exchange of air makes just about impossible to keep the environment inside a tank aerobic, which is essential in preventing odor.
