I am thinking of Purchasing a 1988 Capri 22 with a wing keel. What is the preferable boat Swing Keel or Wing Keel?? Do you find the Wing keel inconvienient when launching? Is the swing keel more preferable for lake sailing? Which is the better sailer? Both views on this are welcome thanks Bill

I don't think that the CAPRI 22 came with a 'swing keel', only a fin or a wing. Are you sure you're not talking about a Catalina 22?

Wing, Swing, Fing.....Sorry ...Fin

Hi Bill, I have a '89 wing keel Catalina 22, and I love it. I looked at a lot of C22's, most with swing keels, and the only reason I didn't buy a swing keel, was the issue of maintanance on the swing keel itself. I just didn't want one more thing to have to do. But I must say that the extra weight, and the longer draft (when completly lowered) is a plus, as well as getting into shallower water(with the keel fully up) is very nice as well. If I sailed in deeper water, and the draft was not an issue, I would like the 36" draft that the fin keel offers( I believe it's 36"). So for me, it was a trade off, less work, a cool 30" draft wing keel( which has protected the rudder from being smashed from rocks once last year, the wing just took the blow and dented the lead), and, I have to anchor in water thats a little deeper than my kids are tall.... but they will grow, and water is good for them! It's all a matter of choice. They are all good, and good fun as well. Take care, Jay

No,Choice,Can of worms

Bill, I forgot, it's not all about me! So now I'll answer the questions that you actually asked; Launching a wing? No problem, just need more water than a swing (a extension on the trailer is helpful at times) really, I never had a problem. Is the swing keel more preferable for lake sailing? It's just a matter of choice, and how big your kids are! Which is the better sailor? Ouch.......auh....I guess that depends on who's at the tiller! See ya, Jay

Catalina 22 Ohio
Capri 22

Hi, As mentioned the Catalina Capri 22 Comes in either fin or wing. The standard fin keel with 650 pounds of lead, or the wing keel with 700 pounds of lead. Draft with the fin keel is 4 feet and with the wing 2 feet, 8 inches. From: http://www.ays.com/new/cap22ttsail.htm "Go for the performance package and fin keel if you’re interested in one-design racing, or the wing keel if you plan to cruise shoal waters or want to make trailering easier." I believe that I have read that the fin keel goes upwind a bit better than the wing. But as far as launching, the 2'6" Fin Capri would be not much harder than the swing keel 22. THe beam of the Capri (8'2") is a bit wider than the Catalina 22 (7'8")and this may make a slight difference in trailering on the road. A sister ship The Catalina 22 is a similar boat but also offers the Swing keel Which has a draft of 2' up and 5' down.

In my opinion: Swing- easy to launch but requires maintenance. Fin - tougher to launch but points the best. Wing - mid-way between the others in launching and pointing. I had a fin keel C22 and strap-launched. Not that big a deal but not as easy as a regular trailer launch.
