I just bought a 1978 25' and I am unclear on how the jib tack gets attached to the front of the boat. There is a fitting there with one hole, I assume for the forestay, and two inverted "hooks"... I imagine that if I attached the jib penant there it could slip off... so how does this all work? The rig was lost overboard before I bought the boat, and I am in the process of re-rigging the entire boat, without, I should add, much experince on sailboats! many thanks Kai

The headsail tack cringle fits over the horns and the remainder of the sail is hanked on to the head stay, unless you decide to set up a roller furler. You could use a bungee cord to keep the sail cringle from slipping off before you get the Genoa hoisted.

Thank you.... just to be sure.... when you say the "horns", do *both* of them get used at the same time... ? I am using the oem jib, not a Genoa at this point too. Kai

The 2 horns
There are 2 horns to enable you to fly 2 headsails at the same time. This is usually done when sailing straight (dead) down wind. You need a whisker pole to make this easier and this work right. Mark

One sail cringle on one horn
One sail tack cringle is slipped over one sail tack horn wether it's a Genoa or a jib tack cringle , the attachment intention is the same. There are two horns in the unlikely event you want to tack and fly two head sails at the same time (which I used to do on my '78 Hunter 25 for down wind running with the genoa poled out to windward and the jib to leward with the mainsail).

ONE AT A TIME PER SAIL
You put the tack on the hook. secure it with a piece of bungee, then hoist the sail, if you want to change sails. you can put a second sail on the other side. if you have a head foil, with slots you can put one up while you take the other down. if you got sail hanks that hook on you can hook a scond sail on under the one thats up then drop one unhook the hanks on it then put a halyard on the second and hoist it. the two hooks are there to let you change quickly. sometimes people put up two but its not very often done.

The metal bow stem fitting on the boat should have at least two holes in addition to the two inverted "hooks". The more forward hole is for the forestay. The more aft hole is for a shackle (usually a snap shackle) that is used to secure the tack of the jib. Some sailors prefer to use a tack pennant to raise the foot of the jib above the bow rail - usually a length of line or metal cable with loops on each end. The cable is secured to the shackle on the stem fitting. The two inverted "hooks" are reef hooks. To reef the jib, you hook your jib reef tack cringle on one hook and then attach your jib sheets to the reef cringle on the luff.
