Sometimes it gets frustrating

to listen to the nonsense, and not unreasonable to finally find someone who speaks a bit o'truth. Newbies, wannabees, experienced hands alike have questions. That's what this is all about. Sharing ideas and answers. But, basically, it gets a little foolish when someone who's been answering repeated questions about an extremely important topic is brought to task because she states the obvious. In many cases, it's about time to say to people who ask really really dumb questions, and to those who take umbrage at a basically honest reply, with a few basics themselves. Get a life? Buy a book!!! and read it. In case you may have missed it, this lady has written a book. And there are still questions about the very subject of that book, from people who've (maybe?) read it, that appear to be more like questions equivalent to "what is the pointy end of the boat called?" Peggie has repeatedly re-answered the same questions, some of which have been on the board during the same day or two cycles, and most of which could have been answered by doing a little (archive) or personal research. It's about time, folks, to perhaps remind the people who are posting incredibly LAME questions on this board to do some of their own homework and research, first. And this question was a "Please HELP!!!." Bottled water, perhaps? It may well be reasonable for some of you, in addition to Peggie, to point this out in the future. It's reasonable to ask questions. It's a great idea to respond. It's good to give references. But sometimes it's not unreasonable to point out some basic ideas about how really, really weird a request is. In all, boating is also a life safety issue, and if this particular respondent can't figure out this question, he could well be a safety hazard to himself and others. What was the hurry (HELP!!!), or could he have waited and called the PO or dealer? Some people who ask and then get responses like this, and then claim they're gonna "quit this board," are unfortunately altogether too common, we've seen it before. If you'll notice, this same questioner asked the same question earlier the same day. http://www.sailboatowners.com/forums/pviewall.tpl?&fno=22&uid=73200280089&sku=2006155042506.42 In a very nice way, BTW. Guess a few hours later he was at wit's end. Just a thought...or, go buy a book.

What's the big deal?

Peggie’s response sort of echoed my own thoughts at the question, but it never hurts to ask any question. But it might be wishful thinking that someone would answer that particular question without knowing the boat or how it’s set up. So it seems to me the question was OK, and Peggie’s response, while not answering the question, seemed OK as well. Life’s too short to be “sensitive”. BTW- I tried to help some on the Catalina Owners forum.

The drinking water system on our boat ...

comes from a fresh water tank. A DC pump draws water from the tank and delivers it to the sink faucet under pressure, much like in your home. If your boat has batteries, a fresh water tank, DC water pump and sink with faucets, more than likely you have what it takes. All thses things need to be checked out. Please report back to us on what you find. Terry

Arrogant Peggie...

I don't think there should be insults towards anyone thrown around here Stu, not by Peggie nor anyone else. Miss headmistress, you know heads and such, you should sick to what you do know and not let a bad day nor your arrogance throw you into belittling a fellow yachtie, newbie or not. You certainly do NOT know about yacht surveying. I started sailing in 1955, studied navigation, piloting, and seamanship until coming out my eye-balls. I came up the ranks, sailed hither & yon, crewed on many, many vessels. Worked for arrogant, assinine skippers, decent teachers et al ad nauseum...learned and learned. Skippered my first delivery in the early 70's, then many more. Started working in the chartering field, then recreational boating and other faucets. built up sea-time, took the USCG EXAM, FIVE differant examinations; recieved 100% on three. Hve been a professional in several fields of boating ever since... Some folks are here to drum up business for themselves, others to palcate their egos, and most to help other 'newbie' boat owners sort things out. I am here for the latter, if other wise I would be handing out my name and number or a pat on the back...;-)I actually give most deliveries away nowdays, have more than my share. I accept no responsibility, liability, nor do I speak here as a professional, just another boatowner, and I have learned many new good tricks and tales while here on this forum; good on ya mates, let us try and keep in civil and leave the egos where they belong...;-)

Fred's right, we all thought this one was over... I posted a reference to the C25 Assoc. on BOTH this AND his first post.

Can I quit my jobs and come to work for you? As you know, I've got "gulf crossing experience" under my belt now. Nice N Easy and TonyB will even verified that I filled in when we lost our cook. Got confident enough one morning that I even gave them a choice - "Guys, you can have a choice this morning. You can have scrambled eggs, or you can have nothing".

Don't feel bad dlewis812.........

when we first bought our H36, my wife and I bought a toilet plunger to be used on our electric head. It took us a few months to realize that there was not need for one. abe

It’s all academic

It seems Mr/Ms Lewis was true to their word in Reply 5 and has not ventured back to this Forum for the sage comments now being bantered. This thread is becoming a "flame" and were I a moderator I would cut it off. It serves no useful purpose when the original questionaire is not paying attention and responders are begining to jab at each other. Fair winds and following seas......

Sarcasm?-Not!

Dear sensitive subscriber, All Peggy did was say what we all know we SHOULD do, but sometimes don't, whether out of arrogance, impatience, or ignorance. Like I was trouble-shooting my head (how appropriate, now that I think of it) while my friend was reading the manual. Oops, operator error, and he showed me in black and white, something I could have learned just by asking the PO. That's not the worst thing that can happen. So, you are the recipient of great advice, wipe the egg off your face, thank the kind people who have helped, and go sailing! Afterwards, we can swap stories about "If I had only known." Poor Question

It can be said "there is never a stupid question" but one can also say "never say never". Catalina 25s have been made for DECADES. In fact, I bought a 1985 heavy-half ton pickup, new, just for the purpose of towing a Catalina 25 or equal. The GVW was based on the C25. At the time there were used Cat 25s on the market that I was looking at so that shows how long these boats have been made. Also back in those days there were cruisers who wrote books, and I'm thinking of Lin and Larry Pardey (sp?), about cruising the world in a boat without an engine, with no electricity, and an oak bucket for a head. They used kerosene for running lights and cabin light. As time went on electric running lights started being used and interior lighting came along and there has been a steady increase in add-ons until today some "boats" have everything a modern home has - pressure water, water heaters, flat screen TVs, generators, washing machines, air conditioning, forced air heat, etc. and etc. So now comes along someone who asks a question about how to work the fresh water system? No year for the boat. Didn't say if they found a water tank - heck, who knows, maybe it doesn't even have one! Apparently didn't even LOOK for a tank (wasn't mentioned). If they looked for the tank you'd think they would have followed the pipe to see if there was a pump and, if there was one, see if it was manual or electric. Or start at the sink and work upstream. How much time and effort does this take? Didn't say if they looked at the Owners Manual. Basically, poster expects someone else to explain everything for them with a million unknowns. What should we do? Plan A: If you feel like you have lots of time on your hands you can try and answer the question - or - Plan B: just ignore it because there's too many variables and unknowns which should have been provided. This isn't exactly a "20 Questions" type of forum.
