depends..

The best rig for daysailing is a single sail centerboard cat. for long distance crusing cutter with Full keel.

Nice one Pete

That is one sweet looking boat. Despite the temptation, I am sticking with my Oday 23; she is perfect for the sailing I do (daysailing with the occasionaly overnighter), and I can barely keep up with the minimal brightwork on her! I have decided that my ideal situation is to have Alberg, Hereshoff and Alden-designed boats docked next to mine and owned by fanatics who live to varnish and invite me on cruises.

Bristol Channel Cutter

Its WAY out of my price range but if I ever win the lottery I might consider one. A gaff rig on one would look just about right.

My choice

Depends where I am sailing. Blue water definitely full keel. Tight harbors partial keel. Like the simple sloop rig though for all around sailing. Definitely mono hull. Too many issue with docking multi hull, unless going to Bimini and related islands, then cat definitely has draft advantages. Will sacrifice interior comfort to sailing ability though.

I'll never know

I may never know what I'd really like to sail unless I win the lottery. I started with a Hobie 4 years ago (too cold in Maine), went to a Pearson 26 (too crowded for weekend cruising.)Sailed a C30 for a year (good space, no luxuries) and finally to a C36 (with space and luxuries. It serves it's pupose being small enough to get out of the marina and large enough to not be cramped for a week. all that said, my 1988 C36 is what I,ve wanted to sail. Until I stepped onto a Catalina 47.......

Blue Water

My choice if I won the lottery would be a schooner. 44-50 foot. Gaff rigged of corse. With top sails and 3 jibs. Lots of wood. It wouldn't be that bad keeping her up, cause that's all I do. Look out Caribbean, here I come. But since I don't have that kind of money, any blue water boat will do, as long as she sails. Can't wait to finish paying off all the bills from my divorse, cause I don't care how broke I'll be, I am going to the Caribbean and live for a change.

Hunter 23 Mentor, Ohio
H54

Might be an odd choice, but I have zero experience with large, classic, blue water boats. Here's the story - 22 years ago, on our honeymoon, wife and I spent an afternoon on an H54, the LA Express, in Montego Bay while staying at Sandals resort. Our combined previous experience was on Sunfishes and a 16' daysailer. We decided right then to get a Hunter someday. Only took 22 years, other priorities, I guess. So this is driven by associations with the time and circumstance more than the boat. Kind of like why you think the bike you had when you were 10 years old was the best ever. Anybody know of the LA Express? I'll bet Franklin, Herb, Didereaux and some of the other Gulf sailors can tell us what LA stands for.

best boat

Even though I have a Beneteau 40 now, I'm still thinking about my next boat. I think I'd like a cutter rigged pilothouse 40-45 feet, with a centerline queen bed in an aft cabin. The Beneteau sails great,is fast and roomy, but I'd like inside steering sometimes. The big genny that makes the Beneteau so fast is also what makes it a lot of work to sail. Cranking that sucker in after a half-dozen tacks gets to be a chore so a self-tacking staysail with a larger main would be nice. I'd also like more fuel capacity than the Bene has.

Oh yah!!!

I too agree with you, but if you can get a Lightning then iI think you should!!! ( they're unbrake-able, last for-ever, and they are well known racing boats.) (one-design!!!)

Happy with what I have

The best boat for me is the one I have now. It's small enough to trailer home to a corner of my back yard where I can tinker on it anytime. Half of the enjoyment is the tinkering and adjusting when I don't quite have enough time to take it down to the water and go sailing. And, IT'S PAID FOR (always pay cash for your toys)
