I am a new owner of a 1986 H23 and there seems to be a lot of play in the rudder and tiller. Is this normal for this boat? I have lots of other questions but lets see how this one goes first.

Yes and no

The play you describe is not normal but it is to be expected, given the age of the boat and the amount of use it has probably had. I also find it interferes with the feedback from the helm (my rudder vibrates over a certain speed). Play (or "slop") in the tiller is most likely due to a worn tiller pivot bolt hole. You have a couple of options here: a) get a new tiller (expen$ive) b) fill the existing hole in the tiller with an epoxy that flows, like Epiglass or West System. Plug or tape the hole securely on one end and fill from the other. Mix more epoxy than you think you'll need, as the wood will absorb a surprising amount. When the epoxy has cured, drill the hole for the pivot bolt. Use a drill press to ensure the hole is perpendicular to the plane of the tiller. Play in the rudder is most likely due to worn (or missing spacers) between the rudder blade and the alumnum housing. These are two hard plastic disks that look like CD's. The easiest fix is to replace them with...old CD's. If you can find some high density polyethylene (HDPE) cut a couple of disks and use those. The tops from a couple of old one-gallon plastic ice tubs will also work in a pinch. Tightening the rudder pivot bolt a bit more will also help. Good luck. Peter H23 "Raven"

kinda sort of...Bruce

A few weeks ago we took the whole rudder assembly home. after sanding, epoxy coat, and bottom paint on the rudder. We used the vise to "squeeze" the steel housing so it's tighter on the tiller and rudder. The through bolt for the pivot really is sad...like a 1/4 inch of play there alone! It's better but still has play in it. I'd like to see bronze bushings with a larger shaft for the rudder. Welcome to the forum! Denise

Damn NBA

That's what I get for watching the game and typing at the same time. My suggestion for rudder spacers should have been one-gallon ICE CREAM tubs, not ice tubs. Sorry. Peter H23 "Raven"

spacers

I was talking to the local rigger a few years ago telling him I wanted to order those spacers . He walked over to his trash can and picked a plastic lid to a coffee can . I had an old mud flap from a commercial truck that I used a 4 inch hole saw to cut spacers from . They are thick and wear well . Lots of things will work . No need to spend lots of money , Mike
