I WOULD LIKE INFO ON ANYONE WHO HAS REPLACED THEIR PLASTIC STUFFING BOX WITH A BRASS STUFFING BOX AND ANTI DRIP PACKING. MY BOAT IS A 30 1991 AND HAS THE PLASTIC STUFFING BOX WHICH I DO NOT TRUST. A FEW QUESTIONS I NEED HELP WITH. IF YOU CLEAN UP THE SHAFT, HOW HARD IS IT TO PUSH THE SHAFT THRU THE CUTLESS BEARING AND FEELING ON PSS SHAFT SEAL VS BRASS WITH NO DRIP TEFFLON PACKING. MY SHAFT IS 1" AND OUTSIDE DIA IS 2" ON STUFFING BOX. ANY INFO WILL BE HELPFULL THANK YOU

Bronze Stuffing Box Installation

I replaced the nylon stuffing box on my 28.5 several years ago with the shaft pushed back till the prop nut hit the rudder. I was able to remove the engine transmission flanges and polish the shaft with wet-or-dry paper, then install a new shaft log hose and bronze shaft log with teflon flax packing. the only problem area was that the fiberglas stern tube and the bronze shaft log diameters were slightly off so I bought the tighter inside diameter to fit the bronze stuffing box and used soap and water on the shaft log hose to slip it over the slightly larger fiberglas stern tube. Make sure you use the heaviest reinforced hose you can find for the shaft log hose and two stainless clamps on each end.

Whew, that's a lot of work to remove a nylon log

that is BETTER than the replacement. IOW don't do it.

Plastics! Just for the record.

Just for the record, a friend of mine who happens to be the father of one of our correspondents here has a 1974 (or nthere-abouts) Irwin 37 with the original "nylon" stuffing box. It works just fine and he has no intention of changing it. And after all these years it still has no corriosion whatsoever on it, and most likely never will.

Nylon Glands

When I bought my H28.5, I was concerned that it had a nylon stuffing box. Since that time, I've had absolutely no trouble with it. IMHO, most stuffing box failures involve the rubber hose/gallows, not the lock nut/adjusting nut regardless of what they are made out of.
