Has anyone installed a Plasteak synthetic teak and holly cabin sole in their boat? If so, are you happy with it? Your comments will be appreciated>

I have an 1985 O'Day 222, named "Niagara." It is beautiful and is a great boat, which looks surprisingly good for a 30 year old boat. (As a comparison, I am on my 6th car during that same time period). About 4 years ago I installed Plasteak on the floor of the cockpit. There had been some surface damage to the floor and I wanted to cover it. The Plasteak worked quite well. I think it actually improved the appearance of the boat and is safer from a possible slip standpoint. However, it is not cheap. Last winter, I had some water get in under the cover and some dark spots developed on the Plasteak flooring and some on the fiberglass seats. Using an anti-mold washing agent, the dark spots came right off the fiberglass but left some residual dark spots on the Plasteak. Perhaps bleach will take those off but I am hesitant to do that. So standing water is something to watch for. In the cabin it might not be a problem.
I might like to add that my original holly sole in the cabin over the bilge began to peal quite heavily and it looked terrible. Three seasons ago, I stripped it and used a Minwax Helmsman Spray Urethane (Home Depot and Lowes both have it). I think I used the semi-gloss but you might like the satin. This product is supposed to be good for exterior use. It also looks quite good since it went on smoothly and seems to be holding up very well. Nor is it scratching. If this is your problem you might consider going that route. It would be much cheaper and would of course be the original sole with real wood.
Hope I helped and best of luck.

Tom:
Thank you for your comments. I believe that my main cabin floor was formerly covered with teak and holly plywood which had been removed when I purchased the boat. I now have adhesive residue on my fiberglass floor, so therefore I have to recover it with real teak or a synthetic product. I love real wood and have always been a woodworker but since that the floor is not perfectly flat and considering the attachment issues, I began to look at synthetics. My floor was never covered in the head or v berth areas and the fiberglass looks good in those sections so therefore I will leave them as is. Plasteak is $50.00 a foot and I need an 8 foot length so I am looking at $500.00 by the time that I purchase adhesives and other materials. I believe that a teak and holly plywood floor would cost me about the same if I do the work myself. I just received a sample packet of flooring from Plasteak today. I will wait until spring before I start this project.

We bought our 272 LE in late 1986...It was an early model for better or worse....It is still a beautiful boat...the cabin
sole however is not so hot in that there are gouges, etc. even thought we purchased a beautiful wool area rug and have used it for most of the last 15-18 years.....I've considered trying to install new teak and holly flooring, but I'm
not blessed with a great selection of tools, etc. and the curvature of the sole is intimidating. I would not want to screw a new floor down as I have seen in a few instances....so your plasteak flooring looks interesting. I think if you
search the web site you'll find other individuals who have posted on this subject...I do have a friend who installed a
new teak and holly floor in his Voyager 26 and did a beautiful job so I know that option is plausible too. Just not for
me. Good luck and keep us informed on your progress. Patrick in Wichita

Stan, good luck on your project. It sounds like Plasteak is a good alternative.
