Placement of rope clutches?

I picked up two double Spinlock rope clutches. The plan is to mount them for single handed operations. I plan on running the haylards down and back with the jib sheets. The cleat for the sheets is after the winch. In most pictures though I noticed that clutches are used in front of the winches. Is the reason for placing these forward of the winch so that the winch can be used on the diffrent lines without the other lines interfering with the winch operation?Josh

Rope Clutches

JoshYou should place the clutches in front of the winch. With the clutch handle down it will allow the line to pass through the cluch in one direction (back toward the cockpit) but not the other. So you can tighten the line with your winch and the clutch will hold it until you release the clutch handle. Be sure to mount the clutch so this will work in the right direction.Paul Palmer

Heh...

Oh wouldnt that suck, sealing these down with 5200 and finding out I put them the wrong way! Nah, I've got at least that much straight..just was wondering where to put them. At first, I was thinking about removing the cleat behind the winch and placing it there, but now Ill put it up front.Thanks,Josh

Why not 5200?

Whats the problem with 5200? Other then its permanancy...which is exactly what I want these clutches to be. I had read a fairly easy way to remove it, with a guitar string, metal, not nylon. Use it like a rope saw, cutting at the 5200 and seperating the equipment from the boat.Josh
