Just replaced piviot pin on a 24 footer. Replacement pin is Stainless Steel. Just been told it could be subject to corrosion...anyone out there experience thiis?

This is on the center board? Stainless steel below the waterline is deprived of oxygen, so,yes corrosion could be a problem if you sail in sea water. Bronze would be a better choice.

Hey many thanks....I have a hunch the answer could lie in the quality of the SS. There is alot of poor quality SS on the market...much of it from Asia. By the way SS got its name Stain-less because when it first came out it stained less then other steel.
I woud have used Zinc.. Just cheap plain old zinc.
Sure zinc will surface rust but so long as it is not touching any other metal it will last longer and hold up better than SS. A plain old zinc bolt is almost 10 times stronger than any plain old SS bolt.

Perhaps you mean galvanized. Zinc is the sacrificial anode that we attach to our propeller shaft. I have never seen a bolt made of zinc.
Those anodes are not hardened... Any old bolt sold at Home Depot is hardened zinc bolt.. The zinc anodes and zinc bolts at Home Depot are 2 completely different animals
Go to Home Depot and they will offer 2 choices of nuts and bolts. Galvanized and Zinc for general purpose. The small sticker below the product for sale will even say ZINC right on it.... They are actually steel with a zinc coating to resist weather.. Straight steel is stronger than SS. So long as the bolt or boat is rinsed down with water and the bolt is not touching any other metal it will perform just as well as SS.. Sure it will surface rust..
There are a variety of arrangements used by the boat manufacturers.
