Being essentially an inland laker this may be a narrow view, but it seems the world is big enough to enjoy a lifetime of ocean sailing while avoiding the hotspots - which always exist no matter the era you find yourself in. Barring around the world quests who would sail near Somalia anyway? They are however doing interesting things these days with stealth technology.

Someone who would rather take their chances with pirates than run the Agulhas current and the Cape of Good Hope.

We'll the Pirate that is going to get me is going to have to do it in the Bahamas, the Gulf of Mexico or the Caribbean. Will not even consider sailing near the Venezuela coast. Like KPGracy indicates there is plenty of World out there to sail in relative safety. Not everyone is interested in circumnavigating. Today is much easier to fly to exotic places if you want to visit.
