I have a 1983 O'Day34. As luck would have it, my depth sounder fried last weekend right at the top of my best sailing season. I pulled it out and sent it in for repair and am not anticipating getting it back anytime soon. I went to the local Wal-Mart and bought a Humming Bird Piranha to stick in until I get my sounder back. Is there anybody out there that has used these things and have a suggestion where I can epoxy the transducer?? Thanks!

Dont you dare!

I would not epoxy the transducer anywhere. thats way to permanant and you seend to thing itwould be temporary. So try these ideas. Cut a piece of pvc pipe large enough for the transducer to fit into and silicone it to the hull inside preferably forward. If you place it very far forward it will not work well because of air getting to in from waves ect. but then if you put it to far aft. you will learn how deep it is after you find the rock. drop the transducer in the pipe and fill it with water. then seal a top on the pipe to keep the water in. If you want to remove it later you can pull it off the hull. If you want to get a little better go to a medical suppy house and get some of the conductive jell that is used for ultrasound techs. Its cheap, fill the tube with that and push the transducer down in the jell. the key is no bubbles of air! if you drill out a pvc pipe end and mount the transducer to it it will hold the transducer lever and hard against the bottom of the pipe, All this can be removed and reused or relocated if you dont like how it works.

Maybe Even Simpler

I stuck mine down with Vasiline nine months ago and it is still there and working.

Thanks

Thanks for the input, but I was more interested in suggestions as to the placement, not installation.

Where to put it........

Now I have a 272LE, and I'm not sure how you are configured inside, but on mine after some experimentation I found that the best place for me is in the forward storage area under the V berth aft of the holding tank where the bow starts to flatten out. I used the gel that the one responder talked about just to experiment on where the best area was before I mounted it.

Use a Ziploc bag

Fill the bag part way with water and place the transducer on it. Power up and move the bag around inside the hull until you get a good strong signal. Peter H23 "Raven"
