Noonsite has a report of 2 yachts attacked by fairly organized and heavily armed pirates. No chance to give up money and valuables peacefully, the first thing the pirates did was open fire with automatic weapons. See the link

Surprise?

Wouldn't sailing a yacht off Yemen these days automatically qualify one for the Darwin Awards?

na....

just take an m60 with you. I believe in standing up for my right to go just about anywhere I want as long as I am not breaking any written laws. Just think of how many less attacks there would be if every boat had an m60 mounted on it :) I know...that's a bit extreme and I am partly joking of course but I do like Ted Nuggents statement. Get yourself a gun and carry it with you. If a guys going to car jack you, kill him. If a guy is going to rape you, kill him. If a guy is going to rob you, kill him. No sense in wasting tax dollars on court cases and cops time. Also cuts down on lawyers too.

Oops...forgot

an m60 is a machine gun carried by light infantry. It has an effective range of about 1200 meters and can easily be handled by most. You see a boat moving fast at you that you don't want near you, just fire a few rounds over their bow and they will for sure turn away. You could easily sink their boat with it or disable their engine if they didn't.

If you know this is a piracy area, why go there?

not very bright to be in that area. On the other hand the only thing that saved these peoples lives was that they were armed with shotguns.... however, I do prefer the m60 for a little added protection. abe

But Franklin, off Yemen you are breaking written

laws. The Koran says they must attack and kill us. It's written, so they do. Can you spell suicide bomber boys and girls? In case you didn't notice, WW III started about 13 years ago with the first WTC bombing. They are getting even for the Crusades.

Very clearly written

Yes, Fred, just like it says in the bible that slaves must obey their masters and anyone working on the sabbath must be killed. Come on, People this an international forum and we are not at war with any religion, just a group of disaffected extemists. We have lots of fellow sailors in all parts of the world and there is no need to slander them because they may have other belief systems. Piracy is simply theft, not a political statement. ALSO RTFA These pirates are suspected Somali criminals

Where do you buy one

Just refresh my memory. Where can a regular guy buy a m60 or even a full auto uzi? How do you declare that to customs at foreign ports? While a 12 guage, mini-14 or pistol might be more practical, if your outgunned what can you do. Pretty hard to run in a sailboat. Avoid, submit or fight seem to be the only options.

"Avoid, submit or fight seem to be the only options. " Yep...your right there and most pick Avoid. Some pick Submit but I tend to pick fight. Must be the Aries in me. Anyway, last I heard, assault rifles are now legal in the US and I saw some for sale last fall at a local gun shop and I think I may have seen a m60 too.

Big Bend of Florida

Back in the early 80's when I was cruising and living aboard my Coronado 35, I was anchored of all neat places, in the Venoy Basin next to the HMS Bounty (St. Petersburg). We were ready to head up to the "Big Bend" of Florida over a direct Gulf crossing to Pensacola. Back then their were reports of "pirates" that took powerboats traveling in this "unprotected area" for the drug trade. Several US Coast Guard folks confirmed this and advised I proceed with caution!! Come on..pirates in the Gulf?! The "Big Bend of Florida"?! Oh well, back then I was convinced to stay away. A figerglass hull is no challenge for bullets. Give me a double planked oak hull frigate with 24-16 pounders and a crew of scurvy dogs and now your talking! Modern day pirates must be avoided. aaaarrrrgggghhhh Bob

Kevin there was not a word of slander in what I

said. But if you don't know what the purveyors of this religion are teaching their 'followers', then you are at risk. Sure, only a small segment of the Mullahs are expounding the death of westerners but that segment was large enough to bring down the WTC, blow up the Cole, bomb Shangrala(sp), blow up the Spanish trains, Blow up,,, Have I made my point? We are at war. I just wish 'W' knew how to fight it. P.S. And those Somali criminals? Yep, Muslims. No one else kills people bringing aid. We were warned to get out of the Muslim tsunami countries ASAP. Not buy terrorist but by the government. Yep, Muslims again. Many are taught to kill us on sight. The motives of the government are in question. Was it fear of the radicals? Fear of having the 'west' on their soil doing good? Fear of terrorist strikes against their government for allowing the Satan on their shore doing good and undermining their hate chant? Who knows. But we do know that our military aid workers were told to get out ASAP. You decide. But don't turn your back on them.

Piracy

I sorry, but I have to question the truth of the piracy. They want us to believe that one man in a slow sailboat with a shotgun (range of what, 40/50 meters max?) just ran off six guys in two speed boats with automatic weapons. In this part of the world, I would think the Automatic weapon of choice would be the AK 47. No way a guy with a shotgun could do what he said unless the six guys were all idiots. All they would have to do is sit out beyond shotgun range and kill everybody with their automatic weapons. Why would they come closer...close enough and slow enough to get run over by a sailboat? I had occasion to become quite familiar with weapons of this type in a previous life while in a southeast Asian paradise, and this story just does not pass the smell test. I understand one problem of cruisers and the reason some do not carry heavier weapons (than a shotgun or pistol) is because they cannot get into, or maybe out of, some of their ports of call with those type weapons. If this one guy had an M60 as mentioned above, firing a 7.62mm round at 500 rounds per minute...then it would make more sense.

K

Kevin

Doesn't smell that bad.

If you read the account closely, it could well have happened the way that it was claimed. You have a man, retired USN, using his own name and the name of his boat (not an anonymous poster on a board) and the other boat, who would be putting his entire reputation on the line if he made up such a bogus story. Also, ultimately, the pirates would be out to board the boats, and according to the account, the victim only began to fire his shotgun when the pirates were attempting to board the boats. Yes, certainly, if these were "smart pirates" they could have done a lot better, but then, even here in the US, the criminals out there are not the brightest people around. And yes, though not in combat, I have fired all of the weapons mentioned, and am familiar with their capabilities.

Fred Said What?

Fred, are you talking about watching out for ALL Muslims? Christians have posed a much greater threat to my life in the past than Muslims have yet I don't fear all Christians.

Try Firing From the Deck of the Boat

Before you shoot your mouth off. A 60 is a difficult weapon to master. I have fired many rounds out of one most through the door of a Huey. The purpose by the way is to keep the heads of the bad guys down if you hit one that is a bonus but not the principle intent. I like the idea but of course it is not practical. Now as far as a 38 if you close enough to do any good with it your already in trouble. It will work for the guy coming through your companionway but if he has a couple of buddies with him you've got problems. Especially since you can only hold six rounds and really should only have five in your weapon. Each bad guy will need two rounds so if there are three and especially if there are more your in trouble. If you sleep better at night because of it great but don't fool yourself. I'd pick the shotgun and alternate the rounds with slugs but would prefer to stay out of sight and avoid any confrontation at all. This discussion is mostly for fun as few of us will ever go anywhere near where this is an issue. I want to mention also the only places in the world I have felt not at ease out in the public were in western Africa. So why go there in the first place? Another point is the there is more to see and do in the middle of any ocean not to mention the scenery is better. Your not going to miss anything by avoiding the area.

Please read next time...

I didn't say hitting them...I said sink the boat or disable the engine. I know very well how to shoot one and it's not that hard to hit a boat with it. Also, the sound is very intimidating. I bet you wouldn't even need to fire it after a you fire a few rounds over their bow. One would have to have a deathwish to try to mess with a boat with an m60.

JT, no, of course not.

But how do you tell peaceful from killer? Back when my son was in high school, ('90 or so) he asked me several questions about Muslims for a school project. I suggested that he read the Koran. It saved me the trouble too. His study revealed to him that it is a violent religion. The founder, what's his name, was a warrior. Again, power and control.

Armed to the teeth

I think I'll stick with my rigging knife and a flare gun. This topic is getting crazy. Sure a fixed mount machine gun would scare away pirates, but imagine tacking with that thing on the bow, and who gets stuck with greasing the gun?
