Hi, all. Long time no speak. I and my husband and father are new owners of an old boat ('73 O-23). Prepping it for the season, we find we have the following question: How do you remove and replace the pin that holds the swing keel, for a cast-iron keel? - Sarah Jane

I was under the impression all oday 23 boats were keel centerboard models. The pivot pin on my boat is held in placeby two wedges that are held in place by two plates that are screwed to the keel. The centerboard itself is not over 40 lbs. I would guess. Harley

I have a 74 o-23 and mine has a pin which goes through the keel and is held in by two cotter pins on either side. Apparently this was the arrangement 71-74, and perhaps prior to that. My boat is currently on blocks for repair, and I will try to post a picture tonight as I will probably be removing the keel this afternoon.

Agree That 1973 has through pin
I also have a 1973 O'Day 23. The wedges configuration is for later boats. I recently replaced the centerboard (about 50#). My boat had a friction-fit stainles pin, about 1" diameter, that passed completely through the keel, capturing the centerboard on a swing bushing. It was fiberglassed in on both faces, so it was hard to spot, but chipping off a little paint made it obvious. Took some serious persuasion to break it free and drive it out to pull the centerboard. Good luck with it. Let me know if you need more.
