My wheel is missing a pin. It's attached temporarily by a nut. Anyone have a schematic of the wheel or know how I can identify and order the missing pin?

The Key?

If you are talking about the key that locks the shaft to the wheel, I'm sure you can find one that will fit well enough there. If not, you can probably take a bolt of the approximate diameter and cut off the head to use it, but only for a very short time. Seriously, there are no doubt several machinists there who can help, or even a truck or aircraft mechanic.

I believe what you are referring to is a woodruf key. Check this site. Any good hardware store will havre them in stock.

Yes it's called a Woodruf key and they come in various sizes. It is usually made of a softer metal than the shaft or the hub but strong enough to permit operation. Some are half moon and others are rectangular square. See what kind of indentation you have on the shaft and measure the width and depth. It should be wide enough to fit in the shaft with not too much play and deep enough to protrude from the shaft and fit into the canal in the hub of the wheel. There used to be a good hardware store in front of the Sunny Isle shopping center. To facilitate removal if you ever need to I would put some grease on the key and loosen the wheel and repack at least once a year.

I remove my wheel at the end of season for winter layup. To keep the woodruf key in place I burred the edges and tapped it back into place on the shaft. This keeps the key in place without being able to fall out yet can be removed with a hammer and punch if need be.

Edward:

The material for the keyway (Woodruf Key) can be purchased at an automotive store. It normally comes in lengths (6-8") that would be much longer than you need. You will need to cut the material to length.

Guys, He's In St. Croix

...even so, he should easily be able to find a key, altho I suspect a truck or aircraft mechanic might be the way to go; doubt there is a Pep Boys near by (but then you never know...)
