Ran into an English pub named the Pig & Whistle in Melbourne, FL. Remembered the expression from old sailing stories. Great Haddock and Chips with mushy peas.
I think I remember visiting a pub and restaurant in Victoria B.C. Canada, in the 1980's, by the same name. Victoria is in many respects much like I would think England would be.

That brings to mind a story concerning the use of "and" five times consectively in a proper sentence.
A man asked a sign painter to make a sign for "the pig and whistle". The sign painter made the sign a bit small and his letters a bit large and the sign read "Thepigandwhistle" The owner said NO> I want a space between pig and and and and and whistle.
